LARNED - A Great Bend man died Thursday after a car and truck collided on K-156, one mile west of Larned.
Barton Community College has announced recipients of 2010-11 endowed scholarships as academic honor awards. These scholarships are awarded by the Barton Community College Foundation. The following students, listed by high school, are recipients of these endowed scholarships.

Pearl Margaret Mater, 96, died Feb. 4 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation. She was born Dec. 30, 1914 in Rush County, the daughter of Oliver Jefferson and Julie Marie (Koochel) Crowell.

ELLINWOOD - Viola Ann Komarek died March 8 in Topeka. Born on Jan. 6, 1920, in Kansas City, she was the daughter of Homer F. McCready and Minta M. (Pierce) McCready. In 1926, she moved with her parents to Florence. She graduated from Florence High School in 1941 (National Honor Society) and moved to Kansas City where she worked in the office at Folgers Coffee Co. On Dec. 2, 1945, she married Norman Frank Komarek of Ellinwood, in Emporia. They moved to Sterling, where they lived for 13 years, moving to Ellinwood in 1958. ROZEL - Jerome (Joe) A. Sauer, 85, died March 10 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Antonino, he was the son of Anton and Pauline Rupp Sauer. On Nov. 24, 1949, he married Martha L. Arnold at Rozel. She passed away on Sept. 10, 2012. A resident of Rozel, he was a retired farmer and an avid hunter and fisherman.
Shortly after midnight Saturday, Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies seized a substantial quantity of methamphetamine and arrested a former Great Bend man on drug-related charges, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.

Thomas James Vaughn, 71, died March 5 at Leisure Home, St. John. He was born on July 28, 1942, at Wellington, the son of Thomas and Leola (Bell) Vaughn. A resident of Great Bend since 1964, he was a retired truck driver for UPS.
