The Barton County Spelling Bee, originally scheduled for the morning of Feb. 12 at the Great Bend High School Auditorium, has been rescheduled to Feb. 5. Sponsors said the date was changed because there was a conflict with the use of the auditorium.
Senior Citizens are invited to enjoy an afternoon of socializing and eating ice cream at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. The Senior Center will provide ice cream and cookies.
Travis Nagel and 4-year-old Jacob Garrett take advantage of warm weather Monday afternoon to have fun with a remote-control motorcycle. Since it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there was no school, they also had plenty of room in the Great Bend High School parking lot. The temperature was in the upper 50s; the rest of this week will only have highs in the 20s and low 30s.

WICHITA - Eugene D. Bentley, 86, died Jan. 17 at Wichita. Services are pending with Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.
LYONS - Edna Manke, 98, died Jan. 15 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. Born Jan. 22, 1912, in rural Ellinwood, she was the daughter of William A. and Henrietta Lantermann Koch. A resident of Lyons since 1967, formerly of Bushton, she was a homemaker. She graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1928. On June 12, 1929, she married Leo F. Manke in Ellinwood. He died September 27, 1994.
ELLINWOOD - Robert B. Reser, 89, died Jan. 16 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation, Great Bend. He was born Feb. 1, 1921, at Caney, the son of Frank Byron and Mattie Fern Condor Reser. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1940. He married Betty Lou Elliott on April 23, 1944, at Denver, Colo. She died Sept. 21, 1992. A longtime Ellinwood resident, formerly of Bushton, he was owner of the former Reser Welding & Repair of Ellinwood.

Smoke from a large grass fire burning north of Interstate 70 on Monday caused a chain reaction accident involving five vehicles, Kansas Highway Patrol reports.
Kansas historian Leo Oliva will present the program, "What Did They Eat on the Santa Fe Trail?" when the Barton County Historical Society hosts a joint meeting with the Quivira Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association next week. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the Barton County Historical Society Museum, located just south of the Arkansas River Bridge on U.S. 281 (Main Street) in Great Bend.
