Colleen Nell Riegel, 82, died Oct. 7 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Nov. 29, 1929 in Dodge City, she was the daughter of George W. and Mae L. (Dooley) Fowler. In 1947 she graduated from Dodge City High School and in 1951 from Emporia State Teachers College. She received her Masters degree from Kansas State University in 1979. On Feb. 14, 1954 she married Jerry Manford Riegel in Dodge City. He died on Dec. 3, 1978. OTIS - Raymond E. Pierce, 78, died Oct. 3 at St. Johns Health Center in Hays. Born Feb. 15, 1934 in Thomas County, he was the son of Orvel and Glenna (Stokes) Pierce. A former resident of the Morland area, he was a driller in the oilfield.

RUSSELL - Julian H. Gonzales, 46, of Russell, died Oct. 6 north of Great Bend. Born July 2, 1966 in Tulia, Texas, he was the son of Larry and Mary Karlin (Garcia) Gonzales. At the age of 2, Julian and his family moved to Goodland, where he grew up and attended schools. On June 16, 1993 he married Vicky Werth in Victoria. Maurine E. Frink 1925 - 2012

ST. JOHN - Maurine E. Frink, 87, died Oct. 6 in St. John. Born April 18, 1925 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of William O. and Mabel E. (Kennedy) Dorland. On Nov. 26, 1944, she married Robert H. Frink, Jr. in Greensburg. He survives. She was a 1943 graduate of Greensburg High School. A resident of St. John since 1954, she worked in the Stafford County Clerk's office and 20 years as office manager for Farm Bureau Insurance of St. John.

Wanda Smith 1933 - 2012

Wanda Smith, 79, died Oct. 7 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 22, 1933, she was the daughter of Lucius Lee and Gladys Fern Greene Cobb. On July 1, 1950 she married William R. Smith in Kansas City, Mo. He died on Oct. 21, 1999. A resident of Great Bend since 1999, coming from Kansas City, Mo., she was employed by Manor Bakery as a department manager, for Clarke Printing Company, and was a homemaker.

Charlotte Davis 1926 - 2012

Charlotte Davis, 86, died Oct. 7 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 13, 1926 in Coffeyville, she was the daughter of Levi Bethel and Tina Mabel (Rose) Haines. On May 20, 1950 she married Samuel G. Davis in Corpus Christi, Texas. He died on Sept. 14, 1976. A resident of Great Bend since 1968, she was a clerk for the Barton County Treasurers and Appraisers Offices.

GBHS student takes advantage of waived tuition Barton courses

Great Bend High School student Greg Burley has a lot on his mind, just like any typical high school student. Between football, wrestling and his duties as junior class president he has a lot on his plate. Even with a full load of responsibility, Burley has been able to look ahead to his future and make the smart decision to take advantage of career technical classes available with no tuition charged through Barton Community College, which was made possible with the passing of Senate Bill 155 effective July 1.

BCC trustees to hold retreat

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hold a retreat on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in room A-113 of the Administration Building on the Barton campus. The retreat will be led by Dr. Marie Kane, retreat consultant from the Association of Community College Trustees. Topics for discussion will include building community relationships, communications, approaches to presidential evaluation, and the Higher Learning Center's Academic Quality Improvement Program system appraisal feedback.
