The Barton Community College men's soccer team came out on top of a physical game against Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Eastern Division foe Coffeyville on Thursday afternoon.
LAWRENCE (AP) - The offensive scheme that Kansas put in place last Saturday night against McNeese State seemed like that of a high school team: Run early and often, and occasionally chuck it deep.
The Barton Community College women's soccer team opened up the Coffeyville defense for 10 goals on Thursday in a 10-0 shutout.

COPELAND - Eula Illene Smith was born April 5, 1922. She died Sept. 7 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
HOISINGTON - Megan E. Escalante, 30, died Sept. 6 in Reno County. She was born Jan. 13, 1981, at Russell, the daughter of John M. and Catherine R. (Munk) Debes. She married Chris Escalante on July 19, 2008, at Topeka. She worked for Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington as a Medical Lab Scientist. She grew up in Hoisington, lived in Topeka for 11 years, and moved back to Hoisington in 2010.
CHASE - John G. Adams, 84, died Sept. 7 at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born Jan. 29, 1927, at Lathem, the son of Roy J. and Gladys Goldie McCarty Adams. He married Vera M. Pfannenstiel on Sept. 10, 1957, at Great Bend. A former oil field pumper, he was a longtime Chase resident, and he moved to Lyons in 2010.

2011 Homecoming candidates for Larned High School have been announced. The king and queen will be crowned Friday night prior to kickoff against Ellinwood. Candidates include (front row) Carrie Kellie, Meredith Rogers, Brianne Smith and Danette Unruh; and (back row) Jeret Johnson, Ashton Glover, Brenden Lewis and Shad Roach. Homecoming activities continue through Friday. The downtown parade starts at 3 p.m. Friday. A Larned High pep rally follows the parade at the Pawnee County Courthouse. The king and queen will be crowned at 7 p.m. Friday at Earl Roberts Field.

LARNED - Jordaan Memorial Library has begun fall hours. The Jordaan Library will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Jordaan Library is closed Sunday.

Gary Lee Campbell, 73, died Jan. 22, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 26, 1941, in St. Elmo, Illinois, he was the son of Emerson and Mildred Louise (Koberlein) Campbell. On April 4, 1961, he married Margaret Rose Debes in Great Bend. She died on July 31, 2013. A Great Bend resident since 1958, he worked in the oilfield and then was a fabricator for Doonan Trailer.
STAFFORD - Students from Stafford, St. John and Macksville schools will compete in the 2015 Stafford County Spelling Bee at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Stafford's south gym.
Larned High qualified students for the State KMEA band festival scheduled Feb. 28 - Jennifer Applequist, oboe; Kwinter Hartshorn, tuba; Austin Carrington, baritone, and Kate Schroeder, flute, who earned honorable mention.
