First a correction from last week regarding double-cropping called to my attention by a reader of the column.. I referred to fall planted wheat after corn or beans as double-cropping. A better description is continuous cropping. Double cropping would be soybeans or milo planted after wheat harvest. LARNED - Millard K. Barrett, 78, died Aug. 4, 2011, at his home in Larned. Born Feb. 15, 1933, in Larned, he was the son of Hugh M. and Elizabeth Boyer Barrett. HUTCHINSON - Maxine F. "Mickey" Proesch, 91, died Aug. 4, 2011, at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. She was born Oct. 20, 1919, at Hutchinson, to Jacob and Mae Frederick. Kans for Kids announced its 2013 scholarship recipients. Any child who has received assistance from Kans for Kids is eligible to receive two scholarships from the organization upon graduation from high school and each year following while they pursue higher education.

Barton Community College student Terra Hull, shown with President Dr. Carl Heilman, is inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society on Thursday evening in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel at Barton Community College. Alpha Sigma Lambda is primarily for non-traditional students. Its aim is to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. Barton had 36 new members in 2013.

Record exports mean summer gas prices won’t be much lower
(MCT) – Summer gasoline prices will be lower in the U.S. than they were last year. But they won't be much lower, experts say, because U.S. refineries have been exporting record amounts of fuel overseas.
