Farm production expenditures climb slightly in 2010
WASHINGTON – After a brief reprieve in 2009, last year farm production expenditures resumed an upward trend. In 2010, U.S. farmers reported spending $289 billion to produce agricultural products, up from $287.4 billion in the prior year. The Farm Production Expenditures 2010 summary released on Aug. 2 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) provides national, regional and Crop and Livestock farm expenditures.

First a correction from last week regarding double-cropping called to my attention by a reader of the column.. I referred to fall planted wheat after corn or beans as double-cropping. A better description is continuous cropping. Double cropping would be soybeans or milo planted after wheat harvest. HUTCHINSON - Maxine F. "Mickey" Proesch, 91, died Aug. 4, 2011, at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. She was born Oct. 20, 1919, at Hutchinson, to Jacob and Mae Frederick. Martin “Marty” C. Smith 1954 - 2013
HOISINGTON - Martin "Marty" C. Smith, 58, passed away Sunday May 19, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City. Born October 7, 1954 in Denver, Colo., he was the son of Robert E. and Evelyn (Collins) Smith. On Jan. 16, 1998 he married Karen King in Springfield, Mo. Marty moved to Hoisington in 2008 coming from Lovington, New Mexico. He served his country in the United States Army and worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator until he was disabled.
Senator Moran now accepting 2013 Service Academy applications
U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) is accepting applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies. The academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2014.
BCARSP meeting
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met on May 10, at Montana Mike's in Great Bend. President Sally O'Connor presided over the meeting. There were 50 members and two guests present.
USD 428, Holy Family, Central Kansas Christian Academy and HeadStart Schools
The following meals will be served May 20 through May 23. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. At the invitation of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Ethan Kaufman, Russell High School, Taylor Fry, Great Bend High School and Conner Birzer, Ellinwood High School, were selected to attend the 30th Annual Governor's Scholars Awards Program on May 5, in Topeka.

Rodrigo (Kino) Adame and Nakita Fischer announce the birth of their son, Kacen Rodrigo Adame, on March 18th. He weighed 5 lbs. 13 oz. and was 18 1/2 in. long.
