Brian Kramer was named Pathways Employee of the Month. He has been with Pathways for just a short time, but has already proven his dedication and caring for the clients of Pathways. Brian started as a Direct Support Worker, but was quickly promoted to House Lead based on his work performance. He makes an effort to get to know everything about the clients he helps and works hard to include them in many community activities. He is also very helpful in other houses and works many hours to ensure clients are well cared for.

The 14th Regiment Armory was built for the National Guard (née New York militia) in 1893. The massive Brooklyn structure was supposed to mimic the castles of Europe - brick towers and fortifications of previous centuries. Now a YMCA, the Armory today is a shelter (filled to capacity) with nursing home evacuees from Hurricane Sandy. The metaphor: What was built originally to protect us, has to be repurposed for a new type of foe.

PAWNEE ROCK - Ladine Peterson, 95, passed away Oct. 29 at the Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born April 2, 1919, in Bison, she was the daughter of Everett and Frances Bitter Edwards. On April 3, 1941, she married Loraine Edwin Peterson in Bison. He passed away Jan. 20, 1995. A lifetime area resident of Rush and Pawnee County, she began her career as a teacher and retired from the ASCS office in Larned. She raised Persian cats and took them to many shows, and she also loved flowers.
Tena Westenhaver of Great Bend is kicking off her Soles4Souls Shoe Drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at her home, 1801 VanBuren. This is just the first effort in her year-long campaign to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes the Soles for Souls organization can distribute to the needy and victims of disasters.

SeaPort Airlines today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved an alternate service pattern for air service from Great Bend Municipal Airport. The new service will replace current scheduled service to Wichita Mid-Continent Airport with nonstop service to Kansas City International Airport.
Coaching basketball at a community college means a lot of new faces nearly every year. Barton Community College men's coach Craig Fletchall knows this. He had been at it for 13 years – eight at Barton where he is the all-time leader in coaching wins.

Five set matches have not been kind to the Barton Community College volleyball team this season. Tuesday night in Colby the Cougars played a 5-set match for the ninth time this season. For the seventh time, Barton lost that fifth and deciding set.
Carter Kruger is hoping a strong finish to last season carries over to this season. The third-year Barton Community College women's basketball coach guided his team the Region VI semifinals last season pulling off a pair of upsets after finishing sixth in the Jayhawk West.
The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. On the agenda are the city's health insurance renewal, street closures for holiday activities, the Prairie Rose Drive paving project and an auto rental lease agreement for the Great Bend Municipal Airport.

The agenda includes an employee recognition award to Donna Shaffer of the Health Department, bridge engineering services, Special Alcohol Funding distribution, Barton County Community Development Advisory Board appointments and longevity pay.
