Scheuerman reunion

The annual reunion of descendants of Conrad Scheuerman, Elizabeth Schwindt Scheuerman and Rosa Matal Scheuerman will begin at 3 p.m. on Aug. 1. with a BBQ and games at the Claflin Community Center, 409 A Street. Activities will continue at the Community Center on Sunday, Aug. 2, with a church service at 9:45 a.m., pot-luck dinner at 12 p.m., swimming and games. Great Bend Evening Lions Club

The Great Bend Evening Lions Club presented the Melvin Jones Fellowship award to Elward (Eldy) Hiss for his 42 years of humanitarian service to the highest degree. Eldy has shown stalwart dedication in his quest to help others through his time spent with the Great Bend Evening Lions Club. He said that while Lions help people in need all around the world, it is his friendship with Club members and the many services they provide locally that means the most to him.

Walnut caterpillar

I have been getting a lot of calls lately about caterpillars defoliating trees in the county. When the culprit has been brought into the office for me to identify, it has been the walnut caterpillar. Since so many people have been seeing this pest in their neighborhoods, I thought that I would share with you a short write-up from K-State Research and Extension's Horticulture expert, Ward Upham about this little pest and how you can control them if you feel it may be necessary.

Argonne Rebels "Hometown Team"

For more than three decades the hometown team providing the support essential to the life and success of the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps was the community of Great Bend and Barton County. An estimated 2,000 area youth, ages 10 through 21, participated in the program. Alumni often describe their membership in the corps as "transformational." Non-tax supported, the corps was dependent on the generosity of local fraternal and civic organizations, churches, school systems, businesses, law enforcement agencies, talented and dedicated staff, families, friends, and countless fans.
