Agent Frank Callahan of Great Bend and Larned has been named Agent of the Month by American Family Insurance. He received the honor for outstanding sales of American Family insurance products during the month of October.

The 9.12 Tea Party's monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum, 5944 West Tenth St. in Great Bend. Election analysis by Dick Friedeman, and John Edmunds will preview the 2013 Kansas Legislative Session. The meeting is open to the public and admission is free.
The Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will show "Spider-man 2" at the next Teen Movie Monday, at 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. On Nov. 19 it will show "Spider-man 3." The movies are free to students in grades 7-12.
The free educational program "Loving Long-Distance: Families Separated by Distance" will help participants understand the time motivation, and effort it takes to keep connected during times of geographical separation.
Sterling House of Great Bend, 1206 Patton Road, will serve lunch to veterans and their spouses at noon Saturday, Nov. 10. There will be no charge for the meal. The event will include a flag raising, old time band and information for veterans.

Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism (KDWPT) game wardens and Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) troopers will conduct a joint checkpoint in south central Kansas in early December. The firearms deer season will open Dec. 3, pheasant and quail seasons opened Nov. 8, the greater prairie chicken regular season started Nov. 15, and duck and goose seasons are also underway. The checkpoint is intended to help enforce state and federal wildlife laws, as well as the state's driver's licensing laws.
A Whole Hog Feed Cancer Benefit will be held for Valarie Smith-Dellrocco at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Central Baptist Church, Lakin and Harrison in Great Bend. Valarie, a resident of Great Bend, was diagnosed with cancer in June 2014. She is now in remission. Funds from the feed will help pay hospital bills.
Danceography will hold their first recital since opening on Sept. 2. "Our First Christmas" recital will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Great Bend High School Auditorium. Doors open at 5 p.m. and tickets can be purchased for $5. Dancers will be from Great Bend, Hoisington, Claflin, Ellinwood, Lyons, St. John and surrounding areas, instructed by Miss Laura Klima.
Southwest Baptist University head softball coach Jim Flora has announced the signing of three athlete's for the 2016 season, including Hunter Middleton, a senior at Great Bend High School. She is the daughter of Shari and Brett Middleton.
Unlike Barack Obama, I am not a father to teenage girls, but it must be something like being President with this obstructionist congress. No good deed for Obama goes unpunished by Republicans in Washington, and the recent climate agreement with China is a good example.
It seems nobody wants to be Secretary of Defense in the Obama administration. The president's first two Defense Secretaries, Robert Gates and Leon Panetta, both complained bitterly this month about their time in the administration. The president's National Security Council staff micro-managed the Pentagon, they said at a forum last week.
