The bid came in 35 percent under the engineer's estimate of $2.3 million. The Federal Aviation Administration will pay 95 percent of the costs. ELLINWOOD - Majorie M. Detmer, 83, died Sept. 14 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born Aug. 7, 1928 at Willowdale, the daughter of Andrew Peter Ziegler and Katherine Thimesch Ziegler.

CAMDEN, Ark. - Kenneth Dale Eiland, 76, died Sept. 13, while in Ouachita County Medical Center in Camden, Ark. Born Aug. 10, 1935 in Gurdon, Ark., he was the son of J.D and Ruby Dale (Ball) Eiland. He attended Camden-Fairview High School. On March 23, 1958 he married Darlene Shultz in Ellinwood. She survives. He was employed in the oilfield both on land and offshore.
HUTCHINSON - Leon Henry Stricker, 81 of Hutchinson, formerly of Milberger, died Sept. 12, at the Reno County Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born Jan. 30, 1930 on the family farm near Milberger, he was the son of Henry, Jr. and Martha (Miller) Stricker. He grew up in the Milberger area and graduated from Russell High School. He then attended the Salt City Business College in Hutchinson.
David L. Hays, 76, died Sept. 13 at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. Born June 1, 1935 in Larned, he was the son of William Anderson and Hannah Laura (Daykin) Hays. On July 11, 1959 he married Rosemarie Stamm at Denmark Manor, Penn. She died Aug. 1, 2000. He was a longtime resident of Great Bend, coming from Larned.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Supreme Court announced Wednesday that Lisa Taylor has been appointed public information director for the Kansas Judicial Branch. Taylor succeeds Ron Keefover, who founded the court's public information office in 1981 and retired in September.
The state's number one librarian will visit the Great Bend Public Library when it holds an open house from noon to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, both recreation centers, City Auditorium and Cavanaugh Wellness Center will be closed today through Sunday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Regular hours will resume on Monday.
The saying, "A picture is worth 1000 words" is so true. In the case of my four month old grandson, we have a book started. Still nothing compares to actually holding, squeezing his chubby legs, or getting Bob to laugh out loud. As we enter the holiday season, families across the country hardly need a reminder that November 24th through the 30th is designated as National Family Week.
