Safe stolen from business

A burglary at the Sears store, 2515 10th St., was reported Saturday morning, after an employee found the door had been forced open. Someone cut the power line to the building at 2:19 a.m. and stole a safe containing $20,000.

DUI suspects run from police

A Great Bend Police officer attempted to stop a 2004 Ford pickup that was reported as having a possible intoxicated driver, at 6:57 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, on Broadway Ave. When the officer made contact with the driver, Dwight Check of Pueblo, Colo., Check reportedly sped off. Check was stopped in the Blockbuster parking lot and arrested for driving under the influence. He reportedly had a blood alcohol content level of 0.21. Check was released Thursday after posting a $1,000 surety bond.

Great Bend Fire Department

Great Bend firefighters were dispatched to an abandoned farm house at 197 North U.S. 281 at 4:29 a.m. Sunday. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Katherine Louise Ball 1929 - 2012

Katherine Louise Ball, 83, died Nov. 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Aug. 17, 1929 in Atlanta, she was the daughter of Shelton C. and Veatrice (Wakefield) Haworth. On Dec. 15, 1946 she married Dewey Daniel Ball in Winfield. A resident of Great Bend since 1955, coming from Plainville, she was a homemaker. She along, with her husband, was a beekeeper. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, sewing, knitting, and Scrabble.

Gregory Allen Bean 1958 - 2012

Gregory Allen Bean, 54, died Nov. 25 at his home in Great Bend. Born April 4, 1958 in Great Bend, he was the son of Paul and Norma (Trent) Bean. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a motorcycle mechanic for Great Bend Yahama. He raced motorcycles winning many state titles. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping.

Catherine Rose Hazen, 86, of Great Bend passed away at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover on Nov. 24 after a brief illness. Born on Jan. 31, 1926 in Ellsworth, she was the daughter of Henry Rudolph and Martha Lena (Herber) Nienke. She was united in marriage to Bernard "Buck" George Hazen on Aug. 16, 1944 at his parents' home in Erie. He preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 2008. Sylvia Fern Marker 1917 - 2012

HUTCHINSON - Sylvia Fern Marker, 94, died Nov. 23 at her home in Hutchinson. Born Dec. 12, 1917 in Nickerson, she was the daughter of Harvey H. and Ida Toewes VanNorman. In October of 1937, she married Lloyd Albert Marker. Together the two enjoyed many years of weekend camping trips before Lloyd's death in August of 2002. A resident of Sterling for 65 years before moving to Hutchinson in 2002, she was a homemaker.

​Free program provides information on long-term care

The next Answers for Senior Kansans seminar will deal with long-term care. The free ASK program will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Presenter Randy Clinkscales, a Hays attorney, will address the topic of how to pay for long-term care when it is needed and will provide information about Medicaid and long-term care insurance. The seminar is sponsored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Angels Care Home Health. Refreshments will be provided by Angels Care Home Health. Visually Impaired support group to hold potluck dinner

Hazardous Operations Training

Farming is a dangerous business. In fact, farming is one of the most dangerous jobs in the US. Every year, around one hundred youth are killed in farm work related activities. A lot of these deaths could have been prevented with better safety practices. Every year, Barton County, K-State Extension and Research provides a class in Hazardous Occupations Training to teach youth ages 13-18 about the Hazards of farm work, and how to create a safer working environment.
