A rumor that there might be shooting at "the high school" spread through two towns Monday afternoon. While students at Great Bend and Larned weren't sure what was going on, law enforcement officers were checking out the same information. Then students with smartphones quickly spread the word through social networks – adding a fair share of speculation. Students said it started with something posted on Facebook.

STAFFORD - L. Evelyn Harrison, 96, died Dec. 16 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. Born Jan. 23, 1916 at the Bethel Community in Kiowa County, she was the daughter of Lulu Wilkinson Hargadine and Walter Hargadine. After her mother died on Feb. 17, 1916 she was raised by her grandparents Alice Hollingsworth Hargadine and L. E. Hargadine. On March 14, 1932 she married Donald Ray Harrison at Hutchinson. He died on Jan. 10, 1990. Along with her husband she was the owner of Ontjes-Harrison Dry Goods Store.
Esther E. Kruckenberg, 84, Great Bend, passed away early on Sunday morning, Dec. 16 at the Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. Born on Dec. 19, 1927 in Russell, she was the daughter of Sigmund and Ernestine (Becker) Keil. The family moved to Great Bend in 1940, and she graduated from Great Bend High School in 1945. Esther was united in marriage to Lyman L. Kruckenberg on Dec. 15, 1946 in Larned, and the couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary the day before her death. Ray S. Schenkel, 77, died Dec. 15 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 20, 1935 in Topeka, he was the son of Emil H. and Hannah (Foos) Schenkel. On Aug. 12, 1959 he married Laura Ann Steinbacher in Great Bend. She survives. A lifetime resident of Great Bend he was
BELPRE - Katrina Marie Holzinger, 22, died Dec. 15, 2012, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Born June 27, 1990 at Fort Polk, La., she was the daughter of Jonathon D. Holzinger and Deana Raye Hall. She was a longtime resident of Belpre, recently from Great Bend, she was a Detention Officer of Barton County Sheriff office, Great Bend. She was of the Christian Faith.
HOISINGTON -In the last tournament of the season, Hoisington High School debaters Robbie Willesden and Erica Schwager went 3-2 at Pratt and earned a 10th place finish out of 32 varsity teams. They defeated two Valley Center teams and a Nickerson teams. They lost to teams from Wichita-Independent and Kingman. Abi Hurter served as the alternate.
Theresa H. Dykes Carlson, 81, did Dec. 16, in Salina. Born Feb. 27, 1931 at Beaver, she was the daughter of Joseph F. and Teresa (Hoffman) Hipp. On July 15, 1950, she married Billy Dykes in Great Bend. He died March 24, 1995. She then married Phil Carlson Sept. 1, 2000, in Great Bend. He survives.
SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Ruth W. Wynn, 87, died Dec. 15 at Mennonite Friendship Manor in South Hutchison. Born May 31, 1925 in Chase, she was the daughter of Fred Leslie and Sara Maude Elliot Willard. In 1943 she graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont. On Dec. 18, 1977 she married Phillip G. Wynn Hr., in Sterling. He died on Oct. 28, 2012. Formerly of Great Bend and Ellinwood, with winters spent in McAllen, Texas, she was a receptionist at Sterling Drilling Company for 14 years.
This Thursday, the staff of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development will be making it easier than ever to take care of last-minute Christmas shopping by staying open until 7 p.m. to fill gift certificate orders.
Barton County Office Buildings will be closed both Monday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, in observance of the Christmas holiday. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will be closed at this same time. The Landfill will close to the public at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 24, and will be closed on Christmas. Emergency services will be in normal operation.
Greg Burley, a junior at Great Bend High School has been selected to serve as Area 6 KAY President. Greg's selection took place at the Nov. 1 Regional Conference hosted by the Halstead High School KAY Club.
Irene R. Ledford will celebrate her 90th birthday from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 22 with an open house come and go for family and friends at 3106 26th Street. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn A. Welch, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, December 22 with a reception from 2-5 p.m. at the J.A. Haas Building, 400 East 18th, Larned. Lynn and the former Judi Ellis, were married on Dec. 22, 1962 in Larned.
CHASE - Katharine Kay Brady, 70, died May 9, 2015, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. She was born Dec. 27, 1944, at Lyons, the daughter of Willis and Frances Haas White. She graduated from Chase High School in 1962. She was married to Melvin Brady. He preceded her in death. A longtime Chase resident, she was a homemaker and CNA at the Ellinwood Hospital.
The Great Bend Cemetery Board will hold a special board meeting for discussion of flower placement for Memorial Day at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 14 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 1209 Williams, Great Bend. The public is invited to attend.
The Great Bend Public Library Board's next meeting is set for 4:45 p.m. Monday, May 11, in the Dane G. Hansen Media Center of the library, 1409 Williams St. Unfinished businesses items on the agenda are heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and the 2016 budget. "Safe Child Policy" is on the agenda as new busines.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will hear a report from the playground advisory committee when it meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. The board will also discuss goals for the coming year. There will be an executive session for discussion of a personnel matter. Board action will be needed in connection with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) National Congress, set for Sept. 15-17.
