James L. Blakey 1935 - 2013

ames L. Blakey, 77, died Feb. 17 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 28, 1935 in Great Bend, he was the son of William and Esther (Langrehr) Blakey. In June 1970, he married Dorothy Parker in Hoisington. She died on March 3, 1973. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a Juvenile Corrections Caseworker for Larned State Hospital.

Antonio M. “Tony” Guajardo 1957-2013

Antonio M. "Tony" Guajardo, 55, Great Bend, passed away at his Great Bend home on Tuesday evening, Feb. 19, 2013. Antonio was born on Dec.11, 1957 at Devine, Texas to Juan and Maria (Munoz) Guajardo. He graduated from Greeley West High School in Greeley, Colo., and lived most of his life in the Devine, Texas area until moving to Great Bend two years ago. Tony was employed by Hertz Rent-a-Car and Smith Security in San Antonio, and since coming to Kansas, was employed at the Kwik-Shop in Great Bend. One of Tony's hobbies was leatherworking.

CBH Foundation purchases analyzer

HOISINGTON - Through the years, Clara Barton Hospital Foundation members have been generously committed to helping Clara Barton Hospital, a not-for-profit Critical-Access Hospital, expand healthcare services and update equipment to meet the community's healthcare needs. This year was no exception. Contributions from the 2012-13 membership drive funded a Hematology Analyzer for the laboratory.

Ellinwood native, entrepreneur and community friend chosen as ‘Distinguished Citizen’

ELLINWOOD - Except for a few years, Richard Kimple has lived in Ellinwood nearly all of his life and invested of himself and his family in the community, including a business, as a volunteer, as well as providing generous support to the schools and area foundations. He also provides emotional support to families during the death of a loved one as owner of his business, Kimple Funeral Home. He is also the owner of Kimple Monuments and Kimple Furniture.

Injury wreck occurs

At 9:02 p.m. on Feb. 20, a 2002 Ford pickup owned by Seth E. Alexander of Garden City was westbound on U.S. highway 156 at mile marker 132 when he lost control on icy roads and crossed the center line. Alexander entered the south ditch and rolled one time coming to rest on its wheels, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.
