LAWRENCE - Julia Louise Saenz, 62, died Jan. 6 at her home surrounded by her family. Born on Nov. 6, 1950 in Lamar, Colo., she was the daughter of Joe and Kathryn "Katie" (Godinez) Saenz. On May 2, 1981 she married James Michael Self in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on July 5, 2010. She was an office manager for St. John the Evangelist Catholic School.

EL DORADO - Irvin P. Burhenn, 85, El Dorado, died Jan. 4 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Born on Aug. 3, 1927 in Barton County, he was the son of Paul and Bertha (Langher) Burhenn. In 1945 he graduated from Great Bend High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War. On Jan. 30, 1952 he married Shirley Sisson at the Christian Church in Alva, Okla. Golden Belt swimmers win Hays meet

HAYS- The Golden Belt swim team recorded a first place finish at last weekend's meet in Hays. Aubrey Snapp placed first in all her events. Cal Dunekack and sister Camryn were standouts as well. Phane Pedigo and Dawson Clark were leaders in the high school boys events. All swimmers improved their times swimming in a 50 meter pool.

Blazers place second

The Barton Blazers took second place in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park Premiere basketball tournament. The Blazers defeated the Reno County Elite, Beastmode, Bobcats, and CNBA. They lost in the championship game to Missouri Flight. The Blazers will be playing at home this coming weekend in the Great Bend MAYB tourney. Players include, Brock Skelton, Evan Campbell, Nick Wondra, Chance Sanger, Ray Kuhlman, Connor Griffith, Sam Ryan, and JJ Heredia.
