Among the agenda items facing the Great Bend City Council when it meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office will be replacing resigned Second Ward council member Marty Keenan and selecting an architect for the Great Bend Convention Center project. Other topics will include a Community Improvement District for Southerlands, a city-wide clean-up, a neighborhood revitalization program, sidewalk improvements and a street resurfacing project.
The Kiowa Gun Club will sponsor a shooting exhibition range day by Savage Arms, partnering with Hornady Ammunition and Nikon Sport Optics. The range day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday will feature several of Savage Arms selection of sport rifles.
Last weekend I attended my thirty-fifth high school reunion. Joining me was my high school classmate and one of my friends, John Holt. Just as we did for our 30th, the itinerary included a visit with a mentor who remains a spiritual influence in our lives – Sister Mary Rose Engle, our Principal at St. Patrick's in 1965 and a Dominican sister for 75 years. Her residence at the Dominican Convent is across the street from the home where I grew up.

The First Presbyterian church invites Great Bend and Barton County communities to a "Music for Mission" concert which will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, 24th and Washington. A variety of instrumental and vocal musical groups representing a diverse make-up of churches located in Great Bend will join together for an afternoon of musical praise to God.
"Embrace Your Heritage," a workshop for local church historians, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Student Activities Center at Kansas Wesleyan University, located at Claflin Ave. and South Fourth St. in Salina. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Registration is $25, which includes lunch. Deadline for registration is Oct. 19.
On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Dominican Sisters of Peace held a Rite of Entrance ceremony for Anne Knight, welcoming her as a new candidate to their congregation of Catholic Sisters. As a candidate, Anne will continue on a path of prayer and discernment, determining whether she will eventually make vows as a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. In this year of candidacy, she will live with a local community of Sisters, participate in their shared life of prayer, study and service, and continue to learn more about the joys and struggles of being a Dominican Sister.
WICHITA - Debbie Huslig, 59, died Sept. 26 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Dec. 10, 1952 in Pratt, she was the daughter of Bernard Louis and Donna Joan "Jo" (Rose) Huslig. A resident of Wichita since 1997, coming from Great Bend, she was a baby sitter, seamstress, beauty operator and aerobics instructor. She was a devoted and loving grandmother.
