BUSHTON - The Central Plains Middle School Renaissance council celebrated a successful first quarter on Thursday, Oct. 27. All students who were passing all classes with a C or higher and had not been referred to the office more than one time throughout the first nine weeks were eligible to attend. Ninety-one percent of all 6-8 grade students achieved this Renaissance goal and got to enjoy an afternoon off from classes with movies and popcorn.
ELLINWOOD -Ellinwood Grade School has just completed another very successful and fun week in observance of Red Ribbon Week. Guidance lessons over the past month have focused on drug and alcohol prevention. Besides learning the importance of being drug free, students had a good time with the theme days and winning prizes with their "Live Drug Free" wristbands last week. ELLINWOOD - Helen Mae Berscheidt Tomberlin, age 94, died Wednesday at Sterling House in Great Bend. Arrangements and services will be announced by Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood.
HOISINGTON - Mary Catherine Weeks, 83, died Nov. 2 at her home in Hoisington. Born Jan. 5, 1928 in Dubuque, she was the daughter of Henry and Philomena (Eckart) Casey. On June 4, 1947 she married John E. Weeks in Dubuque. He died Dec. 22, 1990. A resident of Hoisington since 1952, coming from Russell and Ellinwood, she was an administrative assistant for Barton Community College, office manager for Roxana Oil and was employed at Verna's Clothing in Hoisington.

The Model Association of Central Kansas invites the public to its Fun Fly, from 1 p.m. until dusk this Saturday, Oct. 11, at the MACK flying field. The field is located south of the intersection of Patton Road and Railroad Ave. at 114 SW 20 Ave.
Members of the Knights of Columbus Club in Great Bend are asking the public to help them raise funds to pave the parking lot at their club, 723 Main Street, which is used for numerous public events. There will be a fried chicken dinner at the club from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 12. Cost is $10 for a dinner with all the trimmings. There will be free hot dogs for kids 5 and under, and to-go boxes are available.
CIMARRON - Johnna Franks, 65, died Oct. 8, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. Born Nov. 1, 1948, in Independence, she was the daughter of Johnnie and Norma (Marlett) Carroll. She graduated high school in Fredonia. She was a convenience store manager for 30 years. On June 28, 1970, she married Larry Franks in Fredonia. She and Larry moved to Cimarron from Great Bend, and spent the last three years RVing full time. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards.
LA CROSSE - Viola Mae Yost, 99, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Oct. 7, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born Viola Mae Wimmer on July 25, 1915, in Harlan, she was the daughter of Harvey Lester and Mary Ann Zion Wimmer. She graduated from Portis High School, attended college at York College for two years, then finished her teaching education at Fort Hays State University. She enjoyed a long and successful teaching career to include Alexander (for 31 years), Nekoma, and Heizer. Additionally she served as a substitute teacher for McCracken and La Crosse.
