The Ellinwood VFW Auxiliary held its monthly meeting on April 18. Among the discussions were donations to Kansas Women Veterans, poppy sales, Memorial Day services and a donation of a flag and stand to Horizon, which is a church camp. The newly officers elected are Marlea Callahan, president, Jean Peter, senior vice president, Vada Yarmer, junior vice president, Diane Hill, secretary/treasurer, Lorraine Rickert, chaplain, Ruth Hill, conductress, Vi Eggers, guard, Ruth Hill, historian, Lorraine Rickert, patriotic instructor. Callahan attended the 7th District Convention in Lyons on April 17 with 7th District President Diane Hill.
USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon on Thursday at Great Bend High School, 2027 Morton. Items on the agenda include information regarding the academic programs and the school improvement efforts at Great Bend High School Principal reported by Tim Friess and other staff members.
AURORA, Colo. - Laura Harrell Arbuckle, 41 of Aurora, Colo., formerly of Larned passed away Saturday, April 23. She was born April 30, 1969, at Pratt, the daughter of Jon and Cheryl Harrell. She graduated from Larned High School in 1987, and later attended Friends University. She married Curtis Arbuckle on Aug. 21, 1991.
The Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs Mobile Office will be located at the Great Bend Walmart parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday to assist eligible veterans and family members in obtaining benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Great Bend musicians and music educators Kurtis Koch and Steve Lueth will perform with The Diamonds Thursday night for the Golden Belt Community Concert Association's final concert of the season. On Tuesday, they traveled to Liberal to play with the legendary band in that community's concert series.

Chhitubhai K. Patel, 73, passed away on March 31, at the Hays Medical Center. Born April 29, 1940, in India, he was the son of Karshanbhai R. and Deviben K. Patel. In 1964, he was united in marriage to Bhagvatiben C. Patel. Mr. Patel farmed in India prior to coming to the United States and Jackson, Miss. in 1989, moving to Great Bend in 2011.

LACROSSE - Joel H. Ficken, 60, died March 29, at his home. Mr. Ficken was born April 14, 1953, in Ellis County, the son of Wayne R. and Victoria "Vicki" (Stremel) Ficken. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1971 graduate of LaCrosse High School, he was a farmer, and previously a Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co. distributor. On Nov. 30, 2002, he married Debra S. "Deb" Burton at the United Methodist Church in Bison.
BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Maxine Wyatt, 86, passed away on March 29, at Highlands Health Care in Bella Vista. She was born June 14, 1927 to George and Margaret McCoy in Norton. She graduated from Norton High School and went to work for Southwest Bell Telephone Company. In 1947, she married Ray Wyatt. In 1953, they moved to Great Bend. She worked at American State Bank for 36 years and retired. She did volunteer work at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, and Eucharistic Minister at St. Patrick's Church.
