"These are not your grandmothers' quilts," says the National Quilt Museum of their national contest winners. Barton Community College's Shafer Gallery is now displaying these fabric masterpieces for their current featured exhibit, "New Quilts From an Old Favorite: Orange Peel."
The new advanced registered nurse practitioner at St. Joseph Family Medicine (SJFM) is now available to see patients of all ages. Linsey Carter recently moved to Great Bend to share the SJFM practice with Cherie Morris, M.D. in family medicine with obstetrics, and Charise Oelger, physician assistant.

Most of us while very grateful for the moisture know we are still in a severe drought, especially when you consider that even after the last event many areas are still five or more inches behind normal compared to the long-term yearly average as of this date. November is adoption awareness month and Catholic Social Service is hosting the first annual Bubbles for Babies event from Nov. 14 to 18 to raise awareness about infant adoption. The fun, week-long celebration is an opportunity for individuals to pick up a bottle of bubbles and blow bubbles-both real and virtual-about their experiences and stories of adoption. The event culminates on Nov. 19, National Adoption Day, when one name will be drawn for a very nice prize basket.
Sunflower Early Education Center will sponsor a free screening to all children birth through two from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 16 at the Migrant Parent Advisory Council at Washington School, corner of 12th and Washington. If the Red Cross is in Great Bend to collect blood, Milton, 77, and Merita, 75, Rice of Pawnee Rock will be there. This husband and wife team has given a total of 356 pints of blood, 188 for Milton and 168 for Merita, which equals 44 1/2 gallons. Together, their blood donations over the years may have helped save up to 1,068 lives.
Arun Gandhi, grandson of the great Indian civil rights leader Mohandas K. "Mahatma" Gandhi, has continued the legacy of his late grandfather through peace activism and nonviolence promotion. He will share lessons learned from his grandfather at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State University Campus.

Sunflower Bank has promoted Jordan Klima to Loan Operations Assistant. In this capacity, Klima will be making consumer loans and supporting commercial loan functions in the Great Bend and Ellinwood communities. Prior to the promotion, Klima was a Customer Service Representative.

Another close hard fought match. Another loss. This time it ended the season of the Barton Community College women's soccer team.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Sharon Smolik of Great Bend will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a card shower. A surprise celebration will be held at a later date.
The following well-balanced and nutritious Friendship Meals will be served for lunch at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Meals are served with milk; donations for coffee and tea are accepted.
The following meals will be served Nov. 10 through Nov. 14. The secondary schools also have available daily: second choices, chef salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi began its 2014-15 year in September with new plans for community service, and social and cultural activities. Members welcomed back Brenda Black, who has rejoined the chapter after returning to Great Bend from Topeka.
Sunflower Bank has partnered with Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce to create a visitor information kiosk. The kiosk is located at Sunflower Bank, 13 N. Main in Ellinwood, inside of the ATM center. The Sunflower Bank ATM center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is located just north of the bank's main entrance.
