Beier wins charity poker tournament

Thomas Beier of South Hutchinson took home $500 for his first-place win in the recent Sunflower Diversified Services Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament. June Garrett of Claflin won $300 for second place and Karen Watts of Hays earned $150 for third.

QNWR closed to hunting

Beginning Monday, Nov. 14, Quivira National Wildlife Refuge will be closed to hunting until further notice due to the continued presence of whooping cranes. This closure is necessary to give the crane, an endangered species, protection from mortality. Refuge personnel will continually be monitoring the Cranes' locations. The Refuge may open, and then close, several times over the next few weeks as Whooping Cranes migrate through the area. Carpenter's grandson recalls history of chapel woodwork

The woodwork for the chapel in Central Kansas Medical Center, now St. Rose Health Center, was crafted by Herman Dreiling from Hays. Herman, born in Victoria in 1896, was the father of Noreen (Dreiling) Duncan. Noreen and her husband James Duncan were residents of Great Bend from 1951 to 2013. They moved to Lenexa in 2013 to be closer to their children who all live in the Johnson County area. All four children (John, Tim, Mike, and Ann) graduated from Great Bend High School.

Both the Great Bend boys and girls bowling teams started off their 2015 WAC seasons with home wins against the visiting Dodge City Red Demons. The Panther boys dominated the entire match as they earned all 11 points possible in the contest. The Panthers were led by senior Jeff Meitler who had an exceptional day. The senior captain for the Panthers rolled games of 200 - 278 – 265 in route to a first place finish with a 743 series. Senior Matt Black captured 2nd place honors by rolling a 610 series.
