Library accepting posters for Teen Read Week contest

A contest at Great Bend Public Library invites students in grades 7-12 to create movie posters for their favorite books.

Habitat for Humanity hosts volunteer mixer

With construction on its next house under way and an upcoming talent show fundraiser in the works, Habitat for Humanity of Barton County is hosting a mixer event to thank current and prospective volunteers. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the non-profit organization's construction site, 1906 Hubbard in Great Bend.

Four Kansas Schools receive $5,000 to teach wind energy

CLAFLIN - USD 112 Central Plains School District is one of four school districts in the state to receive $5,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development to install a 1.9 kilowatt wind turbine to educate students on the importance of wind energy as an alternative energy source and to promote rural jobs.

Zeta Gamma Sorority meeting

Zeta Gamma Sorority had their first meeting of the year on Sept. 13 at St. Rose Atrium. The program, given by Ranjan Sachdev, gave the members an awareness of how to maintain a healthy mind and body. Plans were made for the Rush Party. Cake mixes were collected for Mrs. Prossers class at Lincoln elementary school. This is the 31st year for this project. Zeta Gamma's Rush party was held at The Rack. This was a couples party and well attended.

Gloria Hernandez presents Vegan Cooking

Gloria Hernandez's name is becoming synonymous with vegetarian cooking in Great Bend. After teaching classes at the Parent Resource Center and also the Great Bend Recreation Center she now is offering a one-day vegan vegetarian cooking class from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1 mile west of 10th and Patton in Great Bend.

Community Concert Features Paul McDermand on Steel Drum and Marimba

Not often does the Golden Belt Community Concert Association feature a steel drum and marimba percussionist in concert. In fact, this month's performer is the first. Paul McDermand, Caribbean/pop performer on steel drum and marimba, will present the association's first concert of 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.

On Monday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office received calls from individuals in rural Great Bend and rural Pawnee Rock, both reporting attempted fraud via telephone scams.
