FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - As athletic director Jeff Long walked out of the room after telling Arkansas' players that Bobby Petrino had been fired Thursday evening, a void in leadership had already formed.
STAFFORD COUNTY - Staff from Quivira National Wildlife Refuge will present its annual Peeps and Pastries program from 8-10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, April 28. This is a guided tour led by Refuge staff through Quivira's wetlands in a search for some of the many shorebirds that migrate through the area each spring. After the tour, refreshments are provided.
Tickets for the Barton Community College theater department's next production, The "Last Five Years," will go on sale Monday in the Fine Arts Office. The office is open weekday afternoons 1:30-5:30 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased at the Barton County Arts Council, 1401 Main St., Great Bend from 1:30-5 p.m. on weekdays.
The Park Booster Club will host Bingo Night on Friday, April 20, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Park Elementary School gym. Participants can purchase pizza, drink, cookie and two cards for $5. Additional cards, food and drinks may be purchased separately. There will be a grand prize $150 blackout sponsored by AIL and a $100 blackout sponsored by A One Automotive/Kern Floor Covering.
Award-winning Kansas City broadcast news anchor John Holt will emcee the Jack Kilby sculpture unveiling ceremony on Saturday, April 28. A native of Great Bend, Holt returns to his hometown for the ceremony, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse square in downtown Great Bend.
At 9:22 p.m. Thursday, Great Bend firefighters were dispatched to a possible structure at 1401 18th St. Upon arrival they found light smoke in the residence. Chief Mike Napolitano said the owner had been using an outdoor fireplace that was under an awning against the house and a small fire had started under the wood deck it was sitting on.
Roger D. Hickey, 63, died April 13 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Nov. 4, 1948, at Topeka, to Ray and Twila (Epply) Hickey. He married Janelle Brower on Nov. 21, 2001, at Las Vegas, Nev. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he owned Hickey Sheet Metal.
LARNED - Betty J. Fleske, 88, died April 13 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born May 8, 1923, in Pawnee County, she was the daughter of Elmer and Bessie Flick Kirkwood. On Sept. 15, 1948, she married Elmer Fleske at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albert. He died on April 4, 1994. A lifetime area resident, she worked on the farm with her husband for many years.
