With only a few months left until Habitat for Humanity plans to break ground on its next building project, the nonprofit organization raised over $17,000 Saturday at the fourth annual "Barton County's Got Talent" dinner theater.

​Crime Stoppers seeks info on home burglary

A burglary at 1440 12th St. in Great Bend resulted in the loss of $4,120 in property, Police Chief Dean Akings said. Between the early morning on Jan. 11 and 5:46 p.m. on Jan. 16, someone entered the residence and took a 60-inch flat-screen television and TV stand, a white refrigerator and a Eureka vacuum sweeper.

​Library will give away old magazines

The Great Bend Public Library is cleaning out its collection of old magazines, said Jennifer King, head of marketing. "We will be putting older back issues out for the public to take beginning Monday, Jan. 28." Magazines are free while available.

Steven E. Crockett 1952 - 2013

LARNED – Steven E. Crockett, 60, died Jan. 20 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born March 31, 1952, in Dodge City, the son of Edward and Emma James Crockett. On July 8, 1973, he married Carol Arrowsmith at Sedgwick. A long-time Larned resident, he was a disciplinary hearing officer for the Juvenile Justice Authority.

I thought he was exaggerating when my friend called and said he had snakes in large numbers in a water trap in his front yard. I grabbed the camera and drove out to his farm. I was amazed when he lifted the iron cover to expose the mass of reptiles inhabiting that small area. Practically every crevasse housed a serpent.
