Date changed for Barton County Spelling Bee

The Barton County Spelling Bee, originally scheduled for the morning of Feb. 12 at the Great Bend High School Auditorium, has been rescheduled to Feb. 5. Sponsors said the date was changed because there was a conflict with the use of the auditorium.

Enjoying the weather

Travis Nagel and 4-year-old Jacob Garrett take advantage of warm weather Monday afternoon to have fun with a remote-control motorcycle. Since it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there was no school, they also had plenty of room in the Great Bend High School parking lot. The temperature was in the upper 50s; the rest of this week will only have highs in the 20s and low 30s.

Edna Manke 1912- 2011

LYONS - Edna Manke, 98, died Jan. 15 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. Born Jan. 22, 1912, in rural Ellinwood, she was the daughter of William A. and Henrietta Lantermann Koch. A resident of Lyons since 1967, formerly of Bushton, she was a homemaker. She graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1928. On June 12, 1929, she married Leo F. Manke in Ellinwood. He died September 27, 1994.
