Fort Larned Post Band to perform Sunday

The Fort Larned Post Band will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fort Larned. Band director Sarah Langness will lead the band in the performance of "The Star Spangled Banner," "Wild Irish Rose," "Darktown Parade," "Cuba Libre Waltzes," "Mr. Thomas-Cat," and "Veni, Vidi, Vici." Fort Larned will sponsor a ranger program on Buffalo Soldiers at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the visitor center.

Red Cross blood donations low in July as temperatures peak

With extreme heat keeping some donors at home and severe storms forcing the cancellation of dozens of blood drives earlier in the month, the American Red Cross continues to have an emergency need for donors of all blood types. If at least two additional donors give at each blood drive through the end of July – above what the American Red Cross already expects to collect - the blood supply would be sufficient to meet patient needs.

Cartoonists and Red Lines

Like blaming a rape victim for her "provocative dress," many press pundits blame the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists (and the Danish cartoonists before them) for crossing "red lines," and inviting trouble. In the past few days the small community of American editorial cartoonists have been getting calls from their local media, asking for comments about self-censorship and what subjects we should be forbidden to draw in a free society.

Usually over the period of 12 months, you get an equal balance of good days and bad. On the playground of the cosmos, the scales tend to balance out.
