Commission to honor bowling team

Recognizing the Great Bend High School bowling team's championship accomplishments will be on the agenda when the Barton County Commission meets at 9 a.m. Monday at the Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. Other items of discussion will include commercial software for the county, and grants for the Juvenile Justice Authority and Health Department.

Pancake Day draws large crowd

Hundreds of people turned out for the 55th annual Great Bend Kiwanis Club Pancake Day, Thursday at Expo I. This is the club's only fundraiser, with money supporting youth activities and other causes.

Barton Community College graduate Dena Popp is the supervisor for the Barton County 911 Dispatch team, a reserve sergeant for the Barton County Sheriff's Office and also works as a volunteer emergency medical technician in Ellinwood – and she can't imagine doing anything else.

Lenten Luncheon: Foundry Methodist

The next Lenten Luncheon will be Wednesday, March 13, at Foundry Methodist Church, 5401 Broadway Ave. Host pastors are Dr. Kevin and the Rev. Jana Baxter. The Rev. Dwight Dozier from the Assembly of God will be the guest speaker. The weekly luncheons begin serving at noon – not earlier – and end at 1 p.m. Freewill offerings will be taken to defray the expenses of the host congregation. The public is invited to attend all of the luncheons, which will continue through March 27.

The free program "Approaching the Cross: Why Rembrandt Matters," will be presented at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 17, at the church.

I am a person who is fairly involved politically and I do not like what I am seeing. I have discovered, though, that it is tempting to stay focused on the bad things that are happening. If I do, I often miss the good things that are happening at the same time.
