BCC and Russell Arts Council sponsor summer musical

RUSSELL - Eye patches will be in excess when the Russell Arts Council and Barton Community College cosponsor the summer musical, "The Pirates of Penzance," at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30, in the Ruppenthal Middle School Auditorium, 400 North Elm St., Russell.

Kirmer retires

Barton Community College Coordinator of Community Education Janet Kirmer receives a big hug from Dean of Workforce Training Elaine Simmons during her retirement reception Monday. Kirmer's last day is June 28, when she will begin working as the parish secretary for Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Great Bend. George W. Bemis 1935 - 2012

George W. Bemis, 77, died Jan. 26 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 25, 1935 in Great Bend, he was the son of Carney and Ula (Falgren) Bemis. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University, he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Kansas City. On Oct. 31, 1959 he married Jane Olsen at Sparta, Wis. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was owner and operator of Bemis Construction, Inc.

Helen Maxine Barlow 1927-2012

HOISINGTON- Helen Maxine Barlow, 85, died June 18 at Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born Jan. 25, 1927 at Arkansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Ernest and Iola (Kincaid) Hilderbrandt. In 1950, she married E.C. "Dusty" Barlow in Arkansas. Helen was a Barton County resident since 1964. She moved to Texas in 2011 to be closer to her daughters.
