Four area churches are sponsoring a vacation Bible school series that will let kids explore and experience God's underwater universe, and perhaps take their faith to a new level. "Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep with God," is a new VBS package published by Cokesbury. Children 4-12 years old are invited to dive into the fun from 9:30 a.m. to noon daily, July 16-20, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 3400 21st St., Great Bend.
WICHITA - The Jehovah's Witnesses' district convention will be held July 6-8 at the Century II Convention Center, 225 West Douglas Ave., Wichita. An estimated 8,000 people will attend this event and/or the Spanish convention to be held Aug. 17-19 for Bible-based programs, sponsors said.
LARNED - Melvin M. Murphy Sr. 91, died July 5 at Country Place Senior Living in Larned. Born Sept. 24, 1920, in Pawnee County, he was the son of John Elmer and Elizabeth Wilhelm Murphy. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer/stockman. On March 15, 1941, he married Leona Kathleen Byrum at Wichita, where he worked for Beechcraft, and in 1945 he moved to the family farm west of Larned. Leona died March 6, 2003.
NESS CITY - Richard P. Ummel, 64, died July 4 at his home in Ness City. He was born on July 5, 1947, at Ransom, the son of Rolla and Edna Wittman Ummel. He was a retired truck driver for D&S Welding. On July 12, 1969, he married Cynthia Mauch in Ness City. They were later divorced.
