St. JOHN - Leonard Owen Getty, 59, died Jan. 4 at St. John. He was born Nov. 8, 1952 at Lamar, Colo.. His parents were Charles Robert and Norma I. Getty. A life-long resident of St. John, he was a farmer/stockman, graduating from St. John High School in 1971. His memberships were Oddfellows and past fire chief, both of St. John. On May 8, 1976 he married Diane Waters at St. John.
BILLINGS, Okla. - Carol Lea Farmer, 69 of Billings, Okla. was the daughter of August Andrew and Verna Josephine (Mowry) Wise. She was born June 21, 1942 in Hays and died Jan. 4, 2012 at her residence in Billings.
Alicia Bryant went to bed on New Year's Eve prepared to greet a typical New Year's Day. The expecting mother awoke before 7 a.m. knowing immediately that this New Year's Day would be different. She spent the rest of the day and night in labor at Great Bend Regional Hospital before giving birth early Monday morning.
ELLINWOOD - Maurice Winkelman, 89, died Jan.5 at Ellinwood District Hospital. He was born June 15, 1922 in Rice County the son of Carl Winkelman and Lydia Sewing Winkelman.
HOUSTON, Texas - Edward Witte Jr. died Jan. 3. He was born on March 9, 1925 in Great Bend.
Three trustees from Barton Community College will travel to Topeka next week with Barton President Dr. Carl Heilman. The trip to meet with legislators is in lieu of the trustees' monthly study session, which otherwise would have been held on Jan. 5. College officials will travel to Topeka Wednesday morning and return on Thursday.

HOISINGTON - Velma H. McMillin, 90, died Dec. 4 at Via Christi Hospital, St. Francis, in Wichita. Born Jan. 20, 1924, in Melvern, she was the daughter of Oscar and Hazel (Goldsmith) Beck. On Nov. 30, 1940, she married H.D. McMillin in Ottawa. He died July 23, 1993. A resident of Hoisington since 1940, she worked as a florist for many years and she was also the co-owner of Trinkets and Treasures, an antique shop in Hoisington. She was an avid sports fan cheering for the Chiefs, Kansas University and the Green Bay Packers.

The legislation would enable volunteer physicians to serve in Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities that are struggling with appointment wait times or staffing shortages.
