Welcome home

On Feb. 25, the American Legion Riders Post 180 in Great Bend hosted a "welcome home" for two soldiers, Sgt. Shawn Littrell and Spc. 4 Ben Kolas. Both were National Guard, 161st Field Artillery and 35th Military Police, from Great Bend. They recently returned from a one year deployment at Cape Horn, Africa. They were welcomed by family, friends and the Legion Riders. Pictured in the photo are American Legion Riders Director Chris Krueger, Kolas, Littrel and codirector Roy Titsworth.

The Friends of Cheyenne Bottoms raised funds for monarch butterfly habitat restoration by raffling a butterfly quilt made and donated by the Central Kansas Thread Benders Quilt Guild. Quilt Guild member Eloise Winkelman made a wall hanging of one of the butterfly quilt blocks, which was also presented to Taylor.

Before today's topic a brief update is in order. Temperatures the night of April 3 fell well below freezing ranging from the low 20s to around 30 over the area for several hours. Spotty freeze damage has been noted already in South Central Kansas and more will likely become evident over the next little while, especially under warm windy conditions. Progress Club meeting

Progress Club met on April 6, at home Karen Becker with Janet Engleman and Pat Klusener as co-hostesses. Seventeen members attended. The program was given by Jan Peters, CEO of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. Jan grew up in Colby and graduated from Great Bend High School. She spoke about economic development in Great Bend and efforts which have resulted in new businesses here: Central National Bank, Plains State Bank, Almost Home, Seaport Airlines and others. She also noted the efforts of many past and present Great Bend residents who have made a positive difference in our economic community.

Ellinwood FBLA stays active

The Ellinwood FBLA chapter has been very busy these last few weeks. From March 23 to March 25, 29 members and two advisors traveled to Topeka to compete at the State FBLA Conference. Members took tests and gave presentations, both in groups and individually. Ellinwood came out with multiple awards at the ceremony on Wednesday and 11 members qualified for nationals. The National Conference will be held in Chicago, June 27-July 3.

Sixth grade band members present concert Monday

Months of hard work will culminate Monday night at 7 p.m. as approximately 119 students of the Great Bend sixth grade band join forces for their annual concert at Great Bend High School gym. Schools represented include Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, Park, Riley, Holy Family and Central Kansas Christian Academy.
