GBCF announces 2011 Ryan Hugh Dunlap Memorial Scholarship recipients

The Golden Belt Community Foundation recently awarded a scholarship from the Ryan Hugh Dunlap Memorial Scholarship Fund. Ryan's family created a scholarship fund for students wishing to enter the fields of education and/or sports medicine. As a graduate of Great Bend High School, Barton Community College, and Southwestern College, Ryan was tirelessly dedicated to his students and athletes. His lifework was as an athletic trainer and physical education teacher. He took pride in the camaraderie of team sports and watching his student's succeed. The following meals will be served Aug. 17 through Aug. 19 The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

Bill and Delphine Hickey of Hoisington will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the next door south of the Tap Room in Hoisington. Salvation Army distributes backpacks

With financial support from Golden Belt Community Foundation, Credit Union of America, various donations from many other individuals and organizations, Salvation Army of Barton County has supplied over 400 backpacks to students of Barton County this year. The backpacks were packed with school supplies at Simpson Hall, courtesy of the Meyers Chapel AME Church. Volunteers from the Presbyterian Church packed the backpacks and young men from Morton House assisted in hauling the completed backpacks from Meyers Chapel to the Salvation Army Family store where, on Aug. 11, 12 and 13, the majority of the backpacks were distributed.
