API offered two special scholarships this year to students majoring in either Geology or Engineering. API is trying to retain some students to graduate and work in the industry. The winners of these two scholarships were Anthony Cannata and Jonathan Schotte. These recipients were not required for one of their parents to be employed in the oil or gas industry.
It's that time of year again when everything is growing, and people are looking forward to be rewarded for all of their hard work in the garden. With the unseasonal low temperatures this year, your garden might be a little behind normal, but with our recent rains, the weather warming up, and a little bit of care right now, your garden should be getting into the full swing of things.
For Kansans June, July and August are months when some of us return to our roots and visit family in rural communities across the state. Some go back to help with wheat harvest, others go home to spend time visiting with friends they have grown up with. For all it's a time to reflect and remember.

The annual reunion of the descendents of Adam and Clara (Hanslick) Hejny was held on June 2 at the Great Bend Recreation Center. A pot luck lunch was served. Hosts for the occasion were Leonard and Luanne French with help from cousins.
Barton Community College has named 234 students to the President's List for the spring 2013 semester. To qualify for this honor, students must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintained a grade point average of 4.0 on a 4.0 or "A" letter scale.

Golden Sheaf Chapter #226, Order of the Eastern Star, Great Bend, hosted an official visit of the Worthy Grand Matron of Kansas, Dolores (Dee) Smith, and Worthy Grand Patron, Larry Swain, also of the Grand Chapter of Kansas, on May 20, at the Masonic Hall in Hoisington. The purpose of the official visit was to honor Barbara and Warren Tindall and Ruth Herman, with their 50 year pin presentations. JoAnne Massey was not present.
