BBB advice for early tax filers

Around 75 percent of taxpayers get a tax refund each year. The Internal Revenue Service says that the average refund is around $3,000. Many look forward to that money and file their taxes early in the year to get it. This year because of tax law changes made on Jan. 2, the IRS has delayed the opening of the 2013 tax-filing season until the 30th. That is the date when tax returns will begin to be accepted by the IRS.

Darrel Dunekack 1938 - 2013

Darrel Dunekack, 74, died Jan. 21 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Nov. 11, 1938 in Great Bend, he was the son of Wilbur Henry and Vera Anita Faye (Otte) Dunekack. On Oct. 24, 1965 he married Anne Preston in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was employed by Natural Gas Pipeline and was a farmer. He enjoyed farming and gardening and in his younger days fishing and hunting.

The Sons of the American Legion will hold a hamburger and brat feed from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the Argonne American Legion Post 180, 1011 Kansas Ave. in Great Bend. Hamburgers and brats will be available for $5 each for members and guests. Proceeds will support the Sons of the American Legion's programs such as child welfare and the Kansas Soldiers' Home at Fort Dodge.

​Leona Winterlin 1931 - 2015

HAYS - Leona Winterlin, 83, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, April 2, 2015, at the Sterling House in Great Bend. She was born in 1931 in Shickley, Nebraska, the daughter of Dan and Elsie (Birkey) Roth. She married DeWayne Winterlin on Aug. 21, 1954, in Iowa City, Iowa. He died June 20, 2000. She attended Wheaton College and Moody Bible Institute. She was an LPN and worked as a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospital and later at nursing homes in Kansas.
