Diana Collins, 57, died Aug. 15 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 19, 1955, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Richard and Eulalia (Salazar) Mendez. She married Dickey Collins on Jan. 13, 1973, at Syracuse. They later divorced.

C. Ray Scheideman, 77, died Nov. 5 at his home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 29, 1937, in La Crosse, he was the son of Elmer Milton and Amelia (Brening) Scheideman. On Feb. 24, 1962, he married Jacqueline L. Strong in Smith Center. A Great Bend resident since 1964, coming from Hays, he was employed as an installer and repairman for Southwestern Bell for 25 years, then for AT&T, retiring in 1990. Following his retirement, he worked in the telecommunications industry and then for CPI.
LARNED - Winnie I. Ashley, 81, passed away Nov. 5 at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. Born Sept. 11, 1933, in Oklahoma, she was the daughter of George and Edna Messner Neal. On Feb. 24, 1957, she married Leonard Ashley. They later divorced. He passed away on May 28, 2013. A longtime area resident, she was a Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Larned State Hospital.
BAZINE - Sammy Lee Cell, 70, died Nov. 5 at Hays Medical Center. Born Nov. 28, 1943, in Waynoka, Okla., he was the son of Carl "Skeet" and Maxine (Cunningham) Cell. On Sept. 30, 1972, he married Melody Ray Shelton in Great Bend. A resident of Bazine since 1999, living in Salina from 1992 to 1999, and Great Bend from 1965 to 1992, he was a gauger for Plains Marketing and formerly served as a Great Bend Police Officer and Barton County Sheriff's Officer. He loved John Wayne, racing, rattlesnake hunting, and all sports.
Claflin Lions Club will sponsor the 53rd annual Hunters' Breakfast on Saturday. The meal will include all you can eat pancakes, scrambled eggs and ham along with a drink. Serving will begin at 5:30 a.m. and continue until 10:30 a.m. at the new Claflin Community Center, located on "A" street between Williamson and Park Street. Cost for the meal is a free-will donation. Proceeds will enable the club to continue to provide funding for local individuals, organizations and for community events including thier strong commitment to the youth of Claflin and the surrounding area.

Over the last several months, we've heard much about partisan politics. Regardless of what each of us believe or how we vote, it should be obvious that party is running above principle more so than at any other time in modern history.
The Great Bend Black Panthers played their best football in the second half of the season. Coaches usually say "our goal is to get better every game." Coach Tony Crough's team did that.
