The First Congregational United Church of Christ has Fair Trade items at The Gallery, 2021 Forest Ave., Great Bend. For over 10 years the church has brought Fair Trade products to church bazaars, Christmas sales and for sale at the church. Supporting Fair Trade is helping people through the purchase of quality items by connecting the artisan to the public in a more direct manner.

Surrendered Family Ministries will host an area-wide event for the 62nd Annual National Day of Prayer observance on Thursday, May 2. All are invited to participate in the area-wide choir that will take part in the event that will be held at 7 p.m. at the Crest Theater in downtown Great Bend.

Roberts issues statement on Medal of Honor for Kansan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts attended the ceremony at the White House on Thursday to award the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award for bravery, to Father Emil Kapaun, a Kansas priest who served in the Korean war and who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Walter Frank Eilts 1939 - 2013

CHERRYVALE - Walter Frank Eilts, 74, Cherryvale, died on April 8. Born in Rush County on March 14, 1939, he was the son of Edward and Anna Eilts. In 1957 he graduated from Great Bend High School. He attended Salt City Business College. On Aug. 4, 1961, he married Phyllis Chapham.

Lilbourn Duane Karst 1935 - 2013

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Lilbourn Duane Karst, 76, of Phoenix Ariz., passed away on Sunday, April 7, after a long illness with pulmonary fibrosis. He was a loving spouse, respected business owner, proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born in Hoisington on October 27th, 1935, proceeded in death by his father and mother, Constantine Karst and Elsie Irene Eurich.

CLAFLIN - The governing body of the City of Claflin met in regular session, Monday, April 8 at the city building. Present were Mayor Michael Urban, Councilpersons Kirk Schneweis, Kelly Nixon, Casey Hubbard, Leon Oberle and Dan Michaelis. Also present were City Attorney Bob Suelter, City Clerk Patricia Schmidt, Robert and Jennifer Gunder, Richard Hayes, Doug Hubbard, Murine Prosser and Jeff Wasson. These are the unofficial minutes.

USD 428 new hire to fill big shoes

Khristopher J. Thexton, superintendent of Marysville School District 364, has been hired by USD 428 as the new director of finance, operations and federal programs. A quorum of four school board members met in a special meeting Thursday, waiving their right to three days prior notice. After a five minute executive session, they voted to make the offer, which he has accepted.
