New Adventist principal/teacher attends convention

Betty Hay, the new principal/teacher at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School, will join 7,000 other educators from North America at a convention in Nashville, Tenn., from Aug. 5-8.

New Life Baptist VBS features 'Amazing Wonders Aviation'

HOISINGTON - "Amazing Wonders Aviation" is the theme of this year's Vacation Bible School at New Life Baptist Church, 364 W. 12th St., Hoisington. Running from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each evening next week, Aug. 6-10, students will encounter God's awesome power made visible through some of His greatest natural wonders. With stops at the Paricutin volcano, Victoria Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Matterhorn and the Great Barrier Reef, children will get to experience it all, sponsors said.

Otillia “Tillie” M. Schmidt Peintner 1924 - 2012

ST. JOHN - Otillia "Tillie" M. Schmidt Peintner, 87, died Aug. 1 at Kenwood Plaza in St. John. Born Dec. 6, 1924, in Hays, she was the daughter of Joseph and Otillia Staab Schmidt. She was a former resident of Ellinwood, 1978-2009, and formerly of Stafford and Pawnee Rock. On Aug. 17, 1943, she married Donald Peintner at Spearville. He died May 16, 2005.

Margaret E. Archer 1928 - 2012

Margaret E. Archer, 84, died Aug. 2 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 9, 1928, in St. Marys, she was the daughter of Thomas and Theresa (Pheifer) Seitz. She married William E. Archer in Great Bend. He died on April 19, 1998. A resident of Barton County most of her life, she was a homemaker and caregiver.

Russell Dale Westphal 1949 - 2012

TULSA, Okla. - Russell Dale Westphal went to be with the Lord on July 24 in Tulsa, Okla. Born Aug. 25, 1949, in Spearville, he was the son of Cloyd and Betty Westphal of Kinsley. He grew up in Kinsley. He studied architecture at Kansas State University. On May 23, 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Cross, in Lewis. After finishing college they moved to Great Bend where they lived for 16 years. In 1990 Russell and his family moved to Tulsa, Okla., where he continued his architectural career, specializing in custom residential design.

Clara Barton Hospital Foundation and auxiliary partner to fund two new infusion chairs

HOISINGTON - Clara Barton Hospital Department–Outpatient Services has purchased two new infusion chairs thanks to generous donations from Clara Barton Hospital Foundation and Clara Barton Hospital Auxiliary. Memorial donations received by the Foundation in memory of beloved employee Megan Elizabeth Escalante, former and long-time nurse Velma Rose "Grammy" Graves and friend of the Foundation, Ed Billinger, provided the $1,425 needed to purchase one infusion chair. The hospital auxiliary funded the second infusion chair with proceeds from various fundraisers hosted through the year such as their B&N Jewelry, Books are Fun, memorial ornament sales, flower delivery proceeds and more.

Rex Roth 1964 - 2012

ABILENE - Rex I. Roth, 47, died July 29 in Abilene. He was born Oct. 17, 1964, in Garden City, the son of Robert L. and Benji S. (Smith) Roth. Growing up in Great Bend, Lincoln and Herington, he attended local schools, graduated Herington High School with the class of 1983, and attended Barton County Community College. On Dec. 23, 1994, he married Linda D. Hillyard. All of their married life was spent in Abilene. He was employed by Great Plains Manufacturing Land Pride Division of Abilene.
