She was born in Rosetown, Saskatoon, Canada on Aug. 5, 1918, to Joseph and Josephine Suchy, who moved from Kansas to homestead in Canada in the early 1900s. While in Canada, Joy and five sisters were born before the family returned to Kansas.

A 16-year-old male from Great Bend was booked into the Barton County Jail on Thursday on charges of: Felony possession of stolen firearms, conspiracy to distribute meth, conspiracy to distribute stolen firearms, using a telecommunications device for distribution of stolen firearms and meth, burglary of an unoccupied non-dwelling, possession of cocaine, and eight counts of criminal possession of a firearm. He was taken to Reno County Youth Services.

SALINA - Verla L. Hipp, 82, died on Nov. 26, 2013 at Sterling House of Salina. Born Jan. 6, 1931, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Frank Ernest and Helen (Schwartz) Ruble. On July 15, 1953 she married Robert F. Hipp in Great Bend. He died on Oct. 12, 1989. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, moving to Salina in 2009, she was employed for U.S.D. 428 as a Certified Food Service worker for 15 years, retiring in 1994. She was a gifted seamtress.
QUINTER - Rita Houdeshell, 72, of Quinter, died on Nov. 23, 2013 at Hays Medical Center. Born June 7, 1941, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Harley J. and Helen (Strobel) Everett. She was a graduate of Radium High School. On March 4, 1963, Rita was united in marriage to Larry W. Houdeshell in Dodge City. She worked for many years and retired as a certified nurse's assistant at Gove County Hospital in Quinter.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Supreme Court announced Wednesday that Lisa Taylor has been appointed public information director for the Kansas Judicial Branch. Taylor succeeds Ron Keefover, who founded the court's public information office in 1981 and retired in September.
The state's number one librarian will visit the Great Bend Public Library when it holds an open house from noon to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, both recreation centers, City Auditorium and Cavanaugh Wellness Center will be closed today through Sunday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Regular hours will resume on Monday.
The saying, "A picture is worth 1000 words" is so true. In the case of my four month old grandson, we have a book started. Still nothing compares to actually holding, squeezing his chubby legs, or getting Bob to laugh out loud. As we enter the holiday season, families across the country hardly need a reminder that November 24th through the 30th is designated as National Family Week.
