Hit-and-run case is now aggravated battery case

An accidental hit-and-run case is now considered an aggravated battery case, based on new information received by the Great Bend Police Department, Lt. Bill Browne said Monday. The man who reported being hit by a car as he was walking the night of Monday, March 19, now says the driver tried to run him over.

Magdalene Elizabeth Schauf, 79, died on March 24 at Memorial Hospital, McPherson. She was born April 12, 1932 at Beaver, the daughter of Joseph L. and Lena (Hoffman) Schneweis. She was a 1951 graduate of Hoisington High School.

Alberta J. Freidenberger 1928 - 2012

BISON - Alberta J. Freidenberger, 83, died March 23 at Hays Medical Center-Hadley Campus. Born Oct. 1, 1928 in Claflin, she was the daughter of Conrad and Mary (Kukula) Hoffman. In 1946, she graduated from Claflin High School. A resident of Rush County since 1949, she was a homemaker and a bus driver for USD 403 for 20 years. On May 22, 1949, she married Alex J. Freidenberger in Odin. Mrs. Freidenberger was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary and Women of Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America of Trinity Lutheran Church, both of Otis.

James J. “Jim” Schumacher 1937- 2012

RUSSELL - James J. "Jim" Schumacher, 75, of Russell died on March 24 at the Russell Regional Hospital. Born on Feb. 28, 1937 in Park, he was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Stecklein) Schumacher. He grew up and attended the country school near Grainfield. Later, he joined the United States Navy during the post Korean War era. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Geneva Schmidt on Oct. 7, 1961 in Grinnell. From this union they were blessed with four children Shelly, Tod, Bruce and Brian. RUSSELL - Ethel "Mae" Ricketts, 50, died March 25 at her home in Russell. Born Nov. 20, 1961 in Sterling, Colo., she was the daughter of Charles and Tonya Jane (Tootle) Denning. In 1981 she was married to Richard Ricketts in Great Bend. A resident of Russell, she was an LPN at various hospitals. She liked crocheting, quilting and reading.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.
