The Great Bend High School Debate Team competed in their first Debate Tournament at Hutchinson High School, for a two day tournament and brought home five awards. They took three novice teams consisting of Chris Snow, Paige VanSteenburgh, Spencer Johnson, Kary Garcia, Nathanial Cheney, and Brianna Earegood. All did extremely well and most ended up with a winning record. Snow and VanSteenburgh ended the weekend with a 3-2 win-loss record. Martha T. Richards, 89, went to her heavenly home Sept. 29, 2011. She was born May 5, 1922, at Great Bend, and died at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. She was the daughter of Delbert Lee and Minnie Emaline (Engleman) Tucker. She married Oscar Cline Richards on Oct. 14, 1950, at Great Bend. He died Jan. 30, 1993.
ALBANY, Ore. - Josephine (Jody) Laverna Young, 83, of Albany, Ore., passed away Saturday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1928, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of George and Frances (Koelsch) Whitsel. Josephine moved to Albany from Great Bend where she was the Girl Scout District Representative in Barton County for many years. After moving to Albany, Josephine sang with the "Sweet Adelines" and worked in the Albany Public School District assisting young students with drawing and graphic programs. The group has set a goal of $40,000. Scott and Ron helped sponsor an Oilfield Radio-a-Thon.
