CLAFLIN - At 2:33 a.m. Friday morning, a red Oldsmobile Alero, driven by 23-year-old Jessica Thayer of Hays was westbound on K-4 near 789 E. K-4. Thayer swerved to miss an unknown animal in the highway and lost control entering into the south side ditch. The vehicle rolled several times coming to rest facing to the east.
With the game of the year a week away, and No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama taking the weekend off, the other national championship contenders will be jostling for position behind the SEC superpowers on Saturday.

Juanita I. Rose, 76, died Oct. 26 at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. Born Jan. 27, 1935 in Stonington, Colo., she was the daughter of Louie and Goldie (Sloan) Burhenn. On Aug. 14, 1954 she married William Robert Rose in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Radium, she was a pre-school teacher for Berean Pre-school at the First Assembly of God. She loved taking care of children.
Paul M. Maier, 68, died Oct. 26, at Pinnacle Park in Salina. Born Feb. 13, 1943 at Hays, he was the son of Henry and Tabea (Dietz) Maier. A lifelong resident of Barton County, he graduated from Otis High School. On Sept. 3, 1963, he married Nadine Nolte in Ellinwood. They later divorced but remained friends. He worked at Thies Packing Plant in Great Bend for many years and later worked various oilfield jobs retiring from Magellan. He enjoyed fishing, nature, bird watching and loved animals.
Beginning mid-May and running through September, Barton County Appraiser's Office personnel will be conducting their annual re-inspection of real property, which includes residential, commercial and vacant properties.
