HOLYROOD - Fern Marie Zajic, 89, passed away Nov. 14, 2015. Born Oct. 28, 1926, in Ellsworth County, she was the daughter of Hedwig (Hoffman) and Edwin Westerman. On May 14, 1948, she married Harold Ray Zajic in Holyrood. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth County, she was a homemaker.
OSKALOSSA, Iowa - Richard L. Ford, 69, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, died Nov. 11, 2015, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Born May 18,, 1946, in Great Bend, he was the son of L.V. and Betty Cox Ford. He attended school in Kansas. Following school, Richard joined the U.S. Navy Reserves. On May 6, 1972, he married Connie E. Olds. She died April 16, 2014. Ronald. L. "Ron" Royer, 79, died Nov. 14, 2015, at Almost Home, Inc., in Great Bend. Born April 6, 1936, in Sunbury, Penn., he was the son of John W. and Verna (Bartlow) Royer. On July 17, 1955, he married Fern D. Ochs in Otis. A resident of Great Bend since 1993, coming from Otis, he owned and operated Ochs, Inc., of Otis. In his retirement, he enjoyed substituting for USD 428, gardening, and woodworking.
Barton Community College's Prairie Winds Concert Band and Jazz Band, featuring members of the community, will present their annual fall concert titled "It Is Christmas," at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Library at Great Bend High School. The board will recognize Tyler Shirley, a physical education teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, for winning the Kansas Horizon Award, sponsored by the Kansas Department of Education to recognize outstanding first-year teachers.
The Barton Theatre Department will present "The Santaland Diaries," starring Barton Theatre and Kansas State University Theatre alumnus, Great Bend resident Grady Bolding at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Donations will be taken at the door and will go toward new equipment and materials for the theatre program. The play was adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello.
According to the Barton County Sheriff's Department, on Nov. 13, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., a burglary was committed in the 200 block of North East Baker, north of the city of Great Bend. Four firearms were stolen.
