The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Moday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes the recognition of numerous county employees, a grant to enhance the Cheyenne Bottoms Scenic Overlook a Health Advisory Board appointment and a renewal of the county's membership in the Kansas Association of Counties.

STERLING – Beginning in the fall of 2013, a new lecture series will be offered by Sterling College thanks to the generosity of Ross and Fern Freeman of Topeka. The Freeman Lecture Series, as it will be called, was created for Sterling College to promote servant leadership. There will be two lectures per year, one held on campus and one in the Wichita area.

Shellylen Farmer, 56, of Great Bend, died Jan. 29 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
ELLINWOOD - DeLoise Batchman Elliot, 83, died Jan. 30 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Jan. 10, 1930, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Fred Batchman and Katie Irene Herter. On Sept. 3, 1950, she married Claude William Elliot in Ellinwood. He died on March 13, 2012. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, she was a farm wife and provided nursery care.
