Wade LeRoy Meyer, 53, died Dec. 3 in Russell County.
OTIS - Ivan E. Worthen, 91, died Dec. 5 at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia. Born Nov. 23, 1921 in Vinson, Okla., he was the son of Jeffie Earl and Velma Clara (Akers) Worthen. On Feb. 15, 1948 he married Imogene Carpenter in Mangum, Okla. She died on Jan. 3, 1999. A resident of Concordia since 2007, coming from Otis, he was employed at the helium plant, sold insurance for Farm Bureau and finished at the Otis State Bank as a cashier and retired as Senior Vice president.
Patricia L. Schutte, 88, died Dec. 6 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 22, 1924, in Rush County, she was the daughter of Ernest Edwin and Olive Alma (Button) Honderick. On Sept. 6, 1945, she married James Howard Schutte in LaCrosse. He died on Nov. 6, 2004. A Great Bend resident since 1960, coming from LaCrosse, she was a home economics teacher at Harrison and Roosevelt Junior High Schools and Great Bend High School.
Forgiven Quartet will be at Great Bend's Seventh-day Adventist Church at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. The church is located one mile west of Patton Road on 10th St.
Florence O. Mai, 92, died Dec. 6 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 3, 1920, at Galatia, she was the daughter of Emanuel and Elizabeth (Popp) Nuss. She married Walter Adam Mai Oct. 7, 1941, in Russell. A Great Bend resident since 1945, coming from Galatia, she worked as a clerk for Sears, Alco and other department stores.
The Republican controlled U.S. House of Representatives by a bi-partisan vote of 245-139, has passed the STEM Jobs Act which makes 55,000 additional immigrant visas available to foreigners who have earned advanced degrees from U.S. universities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), to whom U.S. employers have offered jobs. Twenty-seven Democrats joined 218 Republicans in supporting the bill. Five Republicans joined 134 Democrats in voting "no".

Hutchinson Community College has announced the honor rolls for the Fall 2014 semester, including grades through the end of the interterm session. 1,317 students have been honored with selection to the two honor roll listings, with 663 achieving the President's Honor Roll with a 4.0 grade point average for the semester.
The Great Bend Area Panhellenic is a local organization for alumni of the Greek sororities belonging to the National Panhellenic Conference. One objective of the group is to promote interfraternity, friendship and collaboration among Greek alumni. On Thursday, the Great Bend Panthers hosted a triangular with Liberal and Holcomb. In girls action the Lady Panthers dominated the day by winning ten of the 11 WAC points possible. Senior Addie Soukup was the high bowler for the Lady Panthers as she rolled a top series of 562. Sophomore McKenzy Black finished in 3rd place as she rolled a series of 504. In junior varsity action the Lady Panthers made it a clean sweep as they swept the medal count. Junior Alex Snyder earned 1st place honors by rolling a 522 series. The egg is in hot water again thanks to recent reports of high cholesterol levels in the U.S. population. With this linkage between high serum cholesterol and coronary heart disease (CHD), these studies and others have led people to believe CHD is the fault of "those dirty rotten eggs."
Ellinwood High School was the place to be this past Sunday! Many people came out to enjoy dinner sponsored by the EHS band, and then ventured on over to the library to see the Smithsonian Exhibit. Dr. Michael Zogry, from Kansas University was our featured speaker. His topic was "Faith and Basketball", and he discussed Dr. James Naismith's connection with basketball and religion.

It is fairly common that my educational programs and workshops emphasize a common theme of health and wellness. The annual Walk Kansas program is just around the corner, so it is time to start rounding up your team members for that successful program. Packets are ready for team captains to pick up at our office and the Great Bend Recreation Commission. I also plan to deliver some packets to the recreation commissions in Hoisington and Ellinwood.
