HOISINGTON - Clara Barton Hospital Foundation will receive $140,000 in Kansas tax credits for the tax years 2012 and 2013 through the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program. The Foundation was notified by the Kansas Department of Commerce that its application was approved. Tax credit awards are distributed through a competitive application process.

TOPKEA - James Elliott Foster, 87, of Topeka, passed away Nov. 17 at Brewster Health Center following a short illness. Jim was born on April 8, 1925, in Topeka. He was the only child of Dwayne Eliab Foster and Geraldine Mareeta Gardner Foster. Although Jim attended Topeka schools most of his life, his family moved to Carlsbad, N.M. for a couple of years at the beginning of the Great Depression, and returned to Topeka. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will observe the following hours for the Thanksgiving holiday: The Recreation Commission Office, the Carl Soden Recreation Center, GBRC Activity Center, City Auditorium and Cavanaugh Wellness Center will be closed Thursday through Sunday. Regular hours will resume on Monday, Nov. 26.
American AgCredit, the nation's seventh largest agricultural credit association, will continue as a Preferred Lender with the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) for the next five years, as announced by FSA State Executive Director Val Dolcini. The Association's subsidiaries, Federal Land Credit Association (FLCA) and Production Credit Association (PCA) have been certified to continue as FSA Preferred Lenders.
This week the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the NSA's metadata collection program was not authorized in U.S. law. The PATRIOT Act, under which the program began, was too vague, the court found. But the truth is the Act was intended to be vague so that the government could interpret it in the broadest possible way.
