Welcome to another edition of Marsh Musings. For most of the year, my red (more like orange) hair separates me from the general public. Sure it is easy to find me in a crowd, but sometimes it is nice to just go unnoticed. Right now, oodles of hunters are flocking from all over the United States to hunt pheasant and deer along the Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway, and they come bringing blaze orange. That's right. Blaze orange. For once, my genetics make me blend in with the hoards of people.

With the winter months upon us and everyone shopping for the Christmas Holidays, I would like to remind the citizens of the city of Ellinwood to be safe and make sure that their property is safe. In recent months there has been a pattern developing, not only in Ellinwood, but through out the area. A person(s) has been entering into unattended vehicles and stealing property. Great Bend High School members in the Southwest Kansas Music Educators Association District Honor Band are: Addison Baxter, first chair percussion; Taylor Fry, second chair flute; Estella Schumacher, trumpet first alternate; and Luke Abbott, second chair euphonium. They are part of the 22-county district band that meets in Dodge City on Saturday, Dec. 3. A concert will be given at 3:15 p.m. in the Dodge City High School auditorium. Also at the concert David Meter, activities director at GBHS, will be honored as the District Honored Administrator.

Genetics, brain function and other factors hold promise of helping researchers predict which teenagers will become binge drinkers and abuse alcohol. A study just out in the journal Nature suggests scientists can teach a computer to make such a prediction with close to 70 percent accuracy.
