Melvin M. Murphy 1920 - 2012

LARNED - Melvin M. Murphy Sr. 91, died July 5 at Country Place Senior Living in Larned. Born Sept. 24, 1920, in Pawnee County, he was the son of John Elmer and Elizabeth Wilhelm Murphy. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer/stockman. On March 15, 1941, he married Leona Kathleen Byrum at Wichita, where he worked for Beechcraft, and in 1945 he moved to the family farm west of Larned. Leona died March 6, 2003.

Richard P. Ummel 1947 - 2012

NESS CITY - Richard P. Ummel, 64, died July 4 at his home in Ness City. He was born on July 5, 1947, at Ransom, the son of Rolla and Edna Wittman Ummel. He was a retired truck driver for D&S Welding. On July 12, 1969, he married Cynthia Mauch in Ness City. They were later divorced.

HOISINGTON - Alvena Aalie Mondt, 68, died July 4 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. Born Jan. 26, 1944, at Ellis, she was the daughter of William Marion Sr. & Donna Sue (Wade) Mondt. A Hoisington resident, she graduated from Delphos High School. She then attended Barton County Community College and graduated from Marymount College in Salina with her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. She worked as an addiction counselor until her retirement.

Wrestling results for Hoisington High School for C.K.L. tournament

The Hoisington Wrestling team came as close as a team can come in not winning a team championship at the Central Kansas League tournament hosted by Hoisington this past Saturday. The team lost by just a mere 1/2 point to Smoky Valley High School. Making it even tougher on the Cardinals was that they had the fire power to have won the tournament, if they had been able to be at full strength. Former GBHS wrestler qualifies for NJCAA Wrestling Nationals

Former Great Bend High School wrestler Zachary Schridde qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Nationals in the 133-pound weight class. Schridde placed fourth for the Pratt Beavers on Feb. 14, at the West Central District Regionals hosted by Colby Community College. Eight colleges participated including colleges from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Pratt Community College Beavers qualified a total of seven of their nine wrestlers for the National Tournament on Feb. 27-28, held in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pratt Beavers are coached by Ken Kepley.
