The Great Bend Recreation Commission has openings for the Kids Safety Day Out program on Friday, June 29, Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. Activities will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. This program is for children 6-12 years old.
Tia McGraff, described as having "a voice stolen from angels," will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 29, in the Ray Schulz Library at the Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village, 85 South U.S. 281 (south of the Arkansas River bridge).

LUBBOCK, Texas - Donald A. Riegel, 86, died June 20. He was born Jan. 29, 1926, at Great Bend, the son of Virgil and Harriet Riegel. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1944, served the United States military in Korea in 1946, and then attended college at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
Larned - Timothy Alan Parker, 22, died June 20 in Larned. Born Nov. 29, 1989, in Shawnee Mission, he was the son of Carl Eugene Parker and Michelle Lynn Naugle Lewis. A Larned resident for the past nine years, moving from Utah, he worked for the Pawnee County Bridge and Highway Department and worked for the Larned EMS. On Feb. 12, 2010, he married Bonnie Jo Harding in Great Bend. She survives.

HOISINGTON - Rose Delores Hekele Schwartz, 85, passed away June 21 at Lexington Park Assisted Living, Topeka. Born Aug. 30, 1926, in Odin, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Seus) Hekele. She married William (Don) Schwartz on Oct. 25, 1948, at Odin. A lifetime resident of Odin and Hoisington, she raised five children and was the youth librarian at Hoisington City Library for 22 years.
Robert M. Gillette, O. D., 91, died June 23 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. Born May 14, 1921, at Kansas City, Mo., he was the son of Harold and Laura Belle (McLaughlin) Gillette. He married Gretta Katherine Braddock on Oct. 15, 1949, at Dodge City. She died June 16, 1989. A Great Bend resident since 1957, coming from Memphis, Tenn., he was an optometrist with Drs. Reinhardt, Gillette and McCaulley, Great Bend.
Nathalie J. Schaben, 84, died June 22 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. Born Feb. 19, 1928, at the family farm in Ness County, she was the daughter of William "Bill" and Lois (McDonald) Borger.

A lot of these deaths could have been prevented with better safety practices. The following meals will be served April 13 through April 17. The secondary schools also have available daily: second choices, chef salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert.
