Betty Freeman, 84, died Aug. 31 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Nov. 2, 1927 at Hutchinson, the daughter of Russell C. and Thelma L. (Lehr) Eastes.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Lois Powell, 87, died Aug. 31, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 11, 1925.

Glenn Earl Hill 1922-2012

Glenn Earl Hill, 89, died Aug. 31 at his home. He was born Dec. 25, 1922 at Indianapolis, Ind. the son of Walter and Vera (Meier) Hill. He married Lois May Bryant June 2, 1946 at Great Bend. She survives. He worked for Western Power and Centel as an office products controller. Mr. Hill was a Great Bend resident since 1945, coming from St. Louis, Mo. He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He was a member the First Bible Baptist Church and recently attended the Heritage Baptist Church, both of Great Bend.

Catch a monarch at Quivira during Monarch Mania

Visitors are invited to attend Monarch Mania, Saturday, Sept. 15, at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, located northeast of Stafford. This free annual event runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Environmental Education Classroom. Activities include a short program about monarchs and their conservation, monarch catching and tagging, and crafts. A new feature, a Butterfly Pavilion with live butterflies, be available during the event.

Convention Center and Airfest on council agenda Tuesday night

Due to Labor Day, the Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the City Office instead of the normal Monday. The agenda will include selecting an architect for the Great Bend Convention Center project, the Airfest, improvements at 24th and Main, and curb and gutter replacements. There will also be an executive session.
