The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a USTA Adult Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 26th. The tournament is open for anyone ages 18 and older. GBRC will be offering the following singles and doubles divisions: men's open, men's 4.5, men's 3.5, women's open, women's 4.5, women's 3.5, doubles and mixed doubles. HAYS- Great Bend's 16U Rebel softball team won the Kansas KSA Class C state championship last weekend at the state tournament in Hays. Great Bend received a first round bye then defeated Clay Center 17-2 and Kansas Storm twice by scores of 4-3 and 5-2 in the championship game. The Rebels improved upon their 3rd place finish at state last year. The team includes players from Great Bend and Lyons. The Rebels are coached by Bob Marcum, Steve Neeland, and Alex Cape.
On August 6, thousands of sci-fi fans will invade Las Vegas for a massive four day Star Trek convention. Over a hundred Star Trek celebrities from the franchise's five series are scheduled to attend (see www.creationent.com), including Michael Dante.
On Monday, the City of Great Bend presented a donation of $1,100 to the Rotary Club of Great Bend. The money donated by the city was raised by silent auction during the Art and Wine Walk event that took place on May 1st. During this event, downtown stores provided hors d'oeuvres and wine to their customers and each participating store showcased a local or regional artist's artwork. The Congregations of St. Mark, Great Bend and St. Paul, Galatia will hold a joint Holy Communion Service on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia. A catered meal will follow the service at noon. The congregations are celebrating Pastor Adam Wutka's 10th anniversary of his ordination in the ELCA, as well as 10 years with this joint parish.
RUSH CENTER - Dotty Ann Kober, 83, died July 13, 2015, at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. Born Sept. 19, 1931, in Rush Center, she was the daughter of Ernest G. and Zelma Mae (Moore) Hallett. In 1953, she married John B. Kober. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1990. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1949 graduate of La Crosse High School, she was a farmer. She also worked for Locust Grove Village in La Crosse for many years.
HAYS- Hundreds of Kansas high school students and graduated seniors from the class of 2015 will converge on the Fort Hays State University campus next week for the annual Kansas East-West All-Star Shrine Bowl football game.
