Great Bend High School Panther card sales will begin on Saturday, Aug. 9. High school student athletes will be canvassing the community beginning on that date to raise funds for the athletic department.
Free physicals for USD 428 high school and middle school athletes will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9 in the commons area at Great Bend High School. This is the only date these physicals will be offered.
Enrollment dates are quickly approaching for USD 428 schools.
There is a simple means to determine whether the surge of Central Americans illegally crossing our border is, as the Obama administration maintains, a result of high crime rates and gang violence, or if, as the Guatemalan ambassador said, "Violence is not the reason," but instead they are economic migrants "trying to reach the American dream." Look at a map.
Teens not working doesn't work for America
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Murray Chiropractic, 2100 Kansas Ave., at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.
Great Bend High School freshmen band members, drum majors and section leaders will meet Monday, Aug. 4-8 and Aug. 11-13 to prepare for the upcoming marching season. Drum majors and section leaders will congregate at 7:30 a.m., with freshmen needing to check out a school instrument meet at the high school at 7:45. The schedule has few days, but longer times this year so the Panther Pride Marching Band will be prepared for the many fall activities. The entire freshman band will start playing at 8-11:30 a.m. and also from 1-3 p.m.

Many people would balk at the prospect of a half dozen teenaged boys roaming about under their roof. Just the logistical challenge of feeding them would test the resolve of most. Others, however, relish the challenge – like Berge and Sharon Cox, retired corrections officers uniquely suited for managing a household full of adolescent boys.
Men might be from Mars and women from Venus, but at least we're in the same solar system. When it comes to politics, liberals and conservatives can't agree on what the problems are much less solutions. We can blame the politicians for not making progress on the big issues of our time, but until Americans share a common truth about what those issues are we won't move an inch.
School starts on Monday for most USD 428 students. All practice also starts for fall sports.
So what can be realistically be done to deal with pesticide resistance once it happens? When pests develop resistance to pesticides, it is a difficult challenge but in most cases not an impossible one. The key to the effectiveness of these management practices include cost, time, markets and climate. Also remember we are speaking about resistance developing in insects and diseases, not just weeds.
