Pawnee County health department approves Wednesday evening hours

There will be a special meeting of the Hoisington City Council at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 23, in the Council Room of the City Building. The purpose of the meeting is to work on the 2016 budget.

Florentine L. Oberle 1919 - 2015

CHASE - Florentine L. Oberle, 96, died July 20, 2015, at Rice Co. Hospital in Lyons. She was born on April 22, 1919, in Ellinwood, to Peter and Anna (Straub) Kimpler. She married George Oberle on Aug. 23 1937, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church north of Ellinwood. He died August 1955. She later married Tony Oberle on Oct. 31, 1959, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church north of Ellinwood. He died March 21, 1995.

Season ticket renewals announced

Renewal notices for Great Bend High School reserved season football ticket have been mailed to 2014 season ticket holders. Fans who held tickets last year but did not receive notification must contact the USD 428 activities office at 620-793-1560. Seating will open to the public later in August once the renewal process is complete. Home games for Great Bend High School are Sept. 4 vs. Leavenworth, Oct. 2 vs. Dodge City (Homecoming), Oct. 9 vs. Liberal and Oct. 23 vs. Salina Central.

Party under the stars

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host its annual viewing party for the Perseid Meteor Shower. Activities will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, and continue until it's dark enough to see the meteor shower. The center is located between Great Bend and Claflin at 592 NE K-156.

​Norman William Koester 1946 - 2015

TOPEKA - Norman William Koester, 68, of Topeka, died July 19, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital. He was born on Sept. 2, 1946, in Hoisington, the son of William and Helen (Langer) Koester. He retired from Washburn University after 25 years as an Electronic Technician. Norm had previously worked for Goodyear and had owned and operated Norm's TV and Organ Repair.

Destination Paradise VBS starts Monday

Vacation Bible School at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church begins Monday evening, July 27 from 6:30-8:45 and closes Friday evening at 6:30 with a program for parents and friends. CLAFLIN - Christopher Alan Oeser, 48, loving husband, son, father, and papa, died July 19, 2015, at his home in Claflin. born May 23, 1967, in Overland Park, he was the son of Alan K. and Sheila M. (Heinz) Oeser. Chris graduated from Claflin High School in 1985. He was a lifetime resident of Claflin and a farmer and rancher.

Community Service Tax Credit Program awards announced

The Kansas Department of Commerce announced today that 23 nonprofit organizations will share $4.13 million in tax credits under the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program (CSP). Since 1994, CSP has helped nonprofit organizations undertake major capital fund-raising drives for various projects.
