BCC Foundation's 6th annual Clay Shoot registrations being accepted

Registrations are being accepted for the Barton Community College Foundation's sixth annual Clay Shoot, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at LaSada Sporting Clays and Hunting Serving, 3721 183rd St., Russell. The last shoot begins at 3 p.m.

BCC to close for Easter weekend

Barton Community College will be closed on Good Friday, March 29, and Monday, April 1. Barton's Center for Adult Education and Shafer Art Gallery will also be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 2.

Paul E. Kern 1925 - 2013

LYONS - Paul E. Kern, 87, died March 22 at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons. He was born Dec. 13, 1925, at Frederick, the son of Frank Mathias and Ina Lavern "Verna" Maxwell Kern. He graduated from Bushton High School in 1943. He married Verna Lee Adams on May 10, 1946, at Wichita. She died June 16, 2006. A lifelong area resident, he was a lifetime farmer.

Michael C. Schaffer 1925 - 2013

LA CROSSE - Michael C. Schaffer, 88, La Crosse, died Friday, March 22 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Fort Dodge. He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Liebenthal, the son of Michael and Magdalena (Herrman) Schaffer. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County. He attended Lucky Hollow Country Grade School, and was a 1943 graduate of Schoenchen High School. After his return from World War II, he worked for the State Engineer's Division in Larned. He later farmed, until his retirement.

DUNDEE - Ronald L. "Ronnie" Claphan, 90, longtime resident of Dundee, died March 22 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Nov. 26, 1922, at Van Buren, Ark., the son of Gerald Ewing and Irene Evidine (Davidson) Claphan. He was a 1942 graduate of Nashville High School, Nashville, Kan. He owned a mechanic shop in Newton. He later moved to Dundee and worked at Dee Dove Buick/Olds/Cadillac in Great Bend for approximately 10 years.
