LARNED - The Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility has gained an additional 15 juveniles while the Topeka-based Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex has lost population.
LARNED - Terri Williams, acting commissioner, Juvenile Justice Authority, said the the proposed consolidation of the Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority with the Kansas Department of Corrections will not automatically make juvenile correctional officers (JCO) staff covered under Corrections KPERS.

A sweet time had by more than a dozen Great Bend retail businesses and shoppers in late November resulted in more than $350 being donated to the Food Bank of Barton County earlier this month.
As a rule, winter tomatoes sold in Kansas this time of year don't measure up to their sun-drenched summer counterparts. That's because winter tomatoes typically travel long distances, so they are picked green then gassed to turn a deep uniform red. While that process pleases the eye, it results in a tasteless tomato.
Because of the New Year's holiday, the Touched by Cancer Support Group will not meet on Tuesday. The group will meet at 2 p.m. on Jan. 15 at the Heartland Cancer Center, 204 Cleveland St., Great Bend. This will be the group's only meeting for the month.

LARNED - Two eighth-inning errors paved the way for Sterling High's softball sweep over Larned Thursday in a Central Kansas League opener. Sterling swept the Indians 4-3 in extra innings and 18-10 in the nightcap.

THAILAND - Richard A. Poage passed away in his sleep at his home in Thailand on Jan. 23, with his companion by his side. Born on Sept. 6, 1940, in Great Bend, he was the son of Marion and Irene Poage. Born and raised in Great Bend he worked in the oilfields, like his father, from the age of 17 until retiring from offshore drilling 10 years ago in Thailand. In 1960, he married Sheryl Wheat. They divorced in 1964. In 1968, he married Vicky Campbell while working in Scotland. The divorced in 1975.
MARSHALL, MO. - Walter Ray Simonson, 88, died Feb. 24, 2015, in Marshall, Mo., after an illness of several months.
