ELLINWOOD - Penny A. Martin-Mulligan, 53, died Dec. 26, at her home in Ellinwood. Born April 10, 1959, in Hutchinson, she was the daughter of Billy and Sharon (Stout) Martin. Penny enjoyed crafts, art, and crocheting.
Eric and Janet Dowson, of Great Bend, announce the engagement of their daughter Amber Lynne Dowson to Matthew Kurtis Koch, son of Kurtis and Debra Koch, of Great Bend. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Charles and Eleanor Rindt of Salina and Dean Dowson of Hershey, Neb. The prospective groom is the grandson of Lewis and Norma Klausmeyer of Goddard.

Great Bend City Slickers met on Dec. 13th. Eight members, two leaders, seven parents and one guest were present. Roll call was taken by naming one of Santa's reindeer. A project talk was given on archery. A health talk was given on teeth and a safety talk was given on hunting safety. Flowers were given to the Senior Center. After a chili supper the club went caroling at Cherry Village. Members brought gifts for the nuns. Members raising livestock must attend showmanship and assurance training and attend five regular 4-H club meetings to sell market projects.

C&V Home Improvement, Great Bend/Hays, announced that four of its employees recently completed Lead Safe Work Practices certification through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Cody Tutak, Deanna Vannoster, Chad Rea and Martin Delgadillo earned their certification by completing the 9 hour course taught by the Kansas Building Institute Workers Compensation Fund.
Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, a time for looking back, making resolutions, and looking ahead. Most farmers have probably reviewed 2012 enough and are ready to look forward. As of today, no one can predict the 2013 growing season. This column certainly doesn't pretend to predict the future. However, there are certainly some actions producers can take regardless of what the growing season brings.

Ellinwood High School Prom 2015 will be held at Ellinwood High School on April 11th. Prom decorations may be viewed by the public from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Promenade will begin at 6 p.m. on the east side of the high school. The prom theme for this year will be Candy Land. The dance will end at 11 p.m. Transportation to After Prom will be on the north side of the high school.
Great Bend senior Jeff Mietler was selected to be on the All Kansas State Bowling team. The Panther captain ended the season with an average of 218. At the conclusion of the regular season, Jeff was named the Most Valuable Player in the WAC and was also named to the All WAC First Team. Mietler anchored the Great Bend boys to a regional runner-up finish and a third place finish at the state tournament.

GREAT BEND - Pam Jackson, 62, died April 7, 2015 at her home in Great Bend.
Hilda Chakir, 98, died April 7 at River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend. Born April 8, 1916, in rural Barton County, she was the daughter of Gustav "Gus" and Matilda (Liese) Kasselman. On Aug. 19, 1939, she married Theodore Richard "Dick" Griffith in Great Bend. He died on April 25, 1977. She then married Norman William Chakir on March 10, 1981, in Miami, Okla. He died on Dec. 30, 2012. A lifetime resident of Barton County she was a homemaker. She was a former 4-H Leader, and enjoyed her family, quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and going to dances.
A free program for caregivers of senior citizens will be presented at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave.

HESSTON – It was an outing the Barton Community College men's tennis team was looking to build some momentum on. The Cougars were looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season and crawl back to .500 in dual matches.
HESSTON – The Barton Community College women's tennis team got healthy Tuesday. In a couple of ways. First Barton had a full team participating after struggling last outing with that. Secondly, the Cougars picked up a 9-0 win – breaking a 6-match losing streak.
It was the biggest win yet. And there have been some big ones. The Barton Community College women's golf team continued to dominant the rest of the field in the Jayhawk Conference winning its fifth straight conference meet this season.
